Application conditions Registration for all the UL patronage scholarships takes place in the period from September 7 to 9, 2020, closing at 23:59. The applicants must complete the online application. All applicants must submit: electronic form in the section “Apply for a scholarship” ; two letters of recommendation from teaching staff, institutes, other academic staff; CV in Europass format; an essay in free format about your favourite patron (volume up to 6000 characters); other documents – see the scholarship application. Ukrainian students – who have fled the war and received a place to study or are enrolled in an exchange programme at one of the networks’ partner institutions – are encouraged to apply. There are no tuition fees. Students from Latvia, Estonia and Finland receive a BAMSE 2022 grant to cover travel, accommodation and living expenses. Please note that the grant is a lump sum and might not cover all expenses. Participants are expected to take care of insurance themselves. On October 18, the University of Latvia will host its Career Opportunity Day for the 13th time, gathering approximately 50 companies representing different spheres. The exhibition welcomes students and everyone looking for new contacts, jobs and internships. Career Opportunity Day is an annual exhibition of enterprises, where companies share their offers of work, internship, collaboration, various activities and lectures with students and everyone interested in career building. The exhibition provides an opportunity to personally address the companies you are interested in, to get to know their representatives, inquire about career and internship opportunities, company culture, required competencies, skills and job specifics. The Career Opportunity Day will take place on October 18 at the UL main building, Raiņa bulvāris 19 and the Academic Centre, House of Science at Jelgavas iela 3 from 10:00 to 16:00. Three teachers of the Faculty of Humanities are teaching the course of the practical Latvian language at the moment: Ilona Gorņeva, Iveta Narodovska and Evelīna Zilgalve. The students who participate in the course say that the courses are useful, since they help to understand the Latvian culture better. Moreover, the students emphasize that it is worth learning a local language, living and studying abroad. “It is not easy to learn Latvian”, says Iveta Narodovska, assistant professor at the Faculty of Humanities, “the grammar differs from other languages. Therefore, it is a great pleasure to see the students’ progress, when at the end of the course they can speak about themselves, their interests and studies in Latvian. Whereas ISSP UL’s MATERIZEunit participated in PHOTONICS+ Virtual Exhibition and Conference.The event was organized in partnership with EPIC and was a new, efficient networking event for the photonics industry. The innovative live, digital event brought stakeholders in the photonics industry together with relevant user areas. More than 5,000 online visitors became part of the community in an inspiring and efficient way: more than 280 technology and application presentations and 1:1 video chats enabled direct contact that facilitates the initiation of new cooperation opportunities and projects. 30 top keynote speakers gave lectures about current topics relating to photonics. About 300 exhibitors from 20 countries participated in this event. EPIC is the industry association with the largest network maintaining the European photonics database. Its members encompass the entire value chain from LED lighting, photovoltaic solar energy
