21st International Young Scientist Conference “Developments in Optics and Communications 2025”

On behalf of the University of Latvia SPIE student chapter, we are pleased to invite students and young scientists to the 21st International Young Scientist Conference “Developments in Optics and Communications 2025” held inRiga, May 8 – May 10, 2025. The conference will be on-site and take place at the University of Latvia Academic Centre, House of Science, Jelgavas Street 3. We would like to encourage you to present your research results with a talk or a poster presentation relevant to the conference topics: • Laser physics and spectroscopy • Optical materials and phenomena • Vision Science • Biophotonics Our conference is open to any enthusiastic student from all over the world. Photo competition ”My University of Latvia” winner announced

Within the celebration year of 90th anniversary of the foundation of the University of Latvia, in April was announced the photo competition ”My University of Latvia” in which the participation was taken by students of the University of Latvia and foreign exchange students. On the jury’s decision, as the best photo was acknowledged the photo taken by Carolina Portugal (exchange student form Spain from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid). Congratulations! The exhibition with the sent in photos will be prepared during summer and will be displayed on September within the celebration programme of the anniversary of the University of Latvia.

University of Latvia welcomes the President of Poland Andrzej Duda

During his official visit to Latvia, Polish President Andrzej Duda has visited the University of Latvia (UL). He viewed the UL Museum and the historical solitary confinement cell, where, among others, during the early history of UL, several Polish students were detained for various transgressions. The President of Poland, together with Professor Indriķis Muižnieks, Rector of the University of Latvia saw the collection of meteorites, which was created by Riga Naturalist Society at the end of the 19 th century – the collection is exhibited at the Museum of the University of Latvia. They also attended the room of clocks, where the correct time was determined and kept since 1869. The custodian of the collections of the Museum of the University of Latvia Rūdolfs Rubenis, told the distinguished guests about the episodes relating to the students who were detained in the historical confinement cell and the reasons why the students used to end up in this place. Latvijas Universitātes students-sportists Miks Babris iegūst Latvijas labākā telpu futbolista apbalvojumu

16.decembrī, tradicionālajā Latvijas Futbola federācijas (LFF) Laureātu vakarā, tika nosaukti 2022. gada Latvijas futbola izcilnieki kopumā 32 nominācijās, kuru vidū vienu apbalvojumu ieguva arī LU students - duālās karjeras sportists Miks Babris. Kā ierasts, uzvarētāji laureātu nominācijās noteikti, apkopojot plašu Latvijas futbola sabiedrības pārstāvju iesniegtās balsis. Starp balsotājiem attiecīgajās nominācijās bija LFF komitejas un valde, treneru padomes, klubu, komandu un akadēmiju pārstāvji, sporta žurnālisti un iesaistītās organizācijas. Uz labākā telpu futbolista nomināciju kandidēja 6 spēlētāji, tostarp Miks Babris. Otro reizi karjerā Miks tika nosaukts par gada labāko telpu futbolistu. Miks ir lepns par iegūto apbalvojumu: "Esmu kļuvis par Latvijas labāko gada telpu futbolistu otro reizi savā karjerā. Are you interested in a mobility experience but worried about fitting it into your study schedule?  FORTHEM offers a fantastic opportunity to participate in a week-long short-term mobility (STM) to France, Italy, Norway, Poland, Romania, Spain, Finland, or Germany.  Applications are now open for 10 FORTHEM short-term mobility programs that will take place between March and August 2025. Bachelor's, Master's, and doctoral students from any study program at UL are eligible to apply. All students participating in a mobility to one of the FORTHEM Alliance universities will receive a scholarship (for accommodation and other expenses) and travel costs based on the Erasmus+ distance calculator. Anniversaries of three scholarships administered by the UL Foundation – celebrating 5, 10 and 15 years of excellence

With the support of selfless patrons, more than 100 capable and promising students of the University of Latvia (UL) and other universities receive scholarships every year. This year marks significant anniversaries for three groups of scholarships founded by patrons from around the world. This year marks the 15 th anniversary of Kārlis Kaufmanis Memorial Scholarship, while 10 years have passed since the first AD VERBUM Scholarship was awarded to young researchers in the humanities, prospective translators and future pre-school teachers, whereas the Ramāns Family Scholarship for Special Education Teachers was established five years ago. Kārlis Kaufmanis Memorial Scholarship “For continued cultivation and prosperity of my beloved field of work – the science of astronomy – in Latvia,” thus wrote Prof. emer. Kārlis Kaufmanis (1910–2003) in his last will and bequest to the University of Latvia. The professor was a graduate of the University of Latvia, the oldest known Latvian

Kursā tiek apgūta ģeogrāfijas un ģeoinformātikas pamatterminoloģija angļu valodā, kā arī studentos veidota izpratne par akadēmisko un nozares valodu.
