Today, 23 May, the Cabinet of Ministers supported inclusion of BA School of Business and Finance into the University of Latvia. As early as last November, the chairpersons of the councils and the rectors of the two universities signed an agreement of intent on the integration of the BA School of Business and Finance into the University of Latvia, and the “green light” was given to this process with the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers.

The order of the Cabinet of Ministers provides that the merger of the two universities will take place gradually until 31 August 2025. The integration process envisages the preservation of the brand and autonomy of BA School of Business and Finance. BA School of Business and Finance will retain the right to select its academic staff, competitive study programmes and cooperation agreements with other universities that provide internationally recognized diplomas will be preserved.

The aim of the university reform is to reinforce science and improve the quality of higher education. The joining of an internationally recognized university offering education in the field of financial management and a research university is a process that strengthens both parties. BA School of Business and Finance has received approbation and support from the financial industry and invited experts for cooperation with the University of Latvia, thereby expanding the opportunities for students to acquire additional study modules, become involved in scientific research processes and use the growth opportunities offered by both higher education institutions.

“The integration of BA School of Business and Finance into the ecosystem of the University of Latvia will enable the establishment of a business school of Baltic scale. This will promote the quality of studies and the development of new research directions. This is an example of well-considered cooperation between the higher education institutions, which is aimed at the advancement, as well as availability of high-quality business studies to every Latvian or foreign student. As a research university, we are committed to training highly qualified, academically educated experts, and the consolidation of the higher education institutions will help achieve these goals,” notes UL Rector Professor Indriķis Muižnieks.

Pursuant to the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers, both higher education institutions will develop a plan for the integration of BA School of Business and Finance into the University of Latvia by 31 August 2025. Representatives of the Ministry of Education, BA School of Business and Finance, UL, student self-governments of both higher education institutions, as well as representatives of the trade unions of both institutions will work together to achieve a shared goal – the successful integration of BA into the UL ecosystem.

“The decision of the Cabinet of Ministers does not affect the study programmes acquired by the currently enrolled students, they are determined by the accreditation of educational programmes and the contracts concluded by BA School of Business and Finance. As of 1 September 2025, we will be an autonomous institution in the ecosystem of the University of Latvia and will continue to implement all our programmes and create new interdisciplinary programmes. Integration into the University of Latvia will enable us to introduce new digital solutions and launch new projects by effectively sharing resources,” says Līga Peiseniece, Rector of BA School of Business and Finance.

Education obtained in Latvia in the field of finance is competitive on an international scale. The inclusion of BA School of Business and Finance in the University of Latvia will strengthen the development, without compelling to compromise between excellence and quality in the niche of business schools, offering students an internationally recognized diploma in an internationally regulated sphere.

Both BA School of Business and Finance and the University of Latvia are committed to continue offering students and the industry modern interdisciplinary education programmes in order to ensure the required number of specialists, because currently the labour market demand greatly exceeds the supply.

2023/2024 admission to both the University of Latvia and BA School of Business and Finance will take place without any alterations, maintaining all the currently accredited study programmes.
