The University of Latvia (UL) ranks first among Latvian higher education institutions in one of the world's most prestigious university rankings in the latest issue of “Times Higher Education” results, as well as is one of the two best rated in the Baltics. UL ranks 601–800 in the world, according to creators of THE rankings.

THE rankings represent the best universities in the world, evaluating their performance according to indicators grouped in five areas – Teaching, Citations, Research, International Outlook and Industry Income.

The University of Latvia has improved its results in four of the five areas. The highest result – 504th place, is achieved by the University of Latvia in the evaluation of Research.

The result for International Outlook is also high – 561st place. Likewise, good results have been attained in the Industry Income – 564th place.

“This year, the growth of the University of Latvia as a modern research university seeking new paths of development is characterized by our success in the prestigious Times Higher Education rankings. We have improved our results in four of the five evaluation categories, but the greatest satisfaction is that the fastest growth has been confirmed in the evaluation of research activity. Shared efforts of the university family, creation of a modern Academic Centre and use of new technologies have strengthened our reputation in research, facilitated the production of interdisciplinary and highly cited publications. Even better results would be expected if the government fulfilled its promises to increase funding for studies,” the Rector of the University of Latvia, Professor Indriķis Muižnieks comments upon the newly released results.

Among Latvian higher education institutions, Riga Technical University and Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies are also included in THE rankings, taking 1001+ place.

The University of Oxford (UK) is ranked the highest, followed by Stanford University (USA) in the 2nd place, and Harvard University (USA) in the 3rd place.

Times Higher Education is one of the three most influential university rankings worldwide, published for the 18th year. This year, more than 1 500 leading universities from 93 countries of the world have been assessed in THE rankings, using both the information provided by higher education institutions and the information obtained from surveys. THE rankings provide a broad and balanced comparison of universities in according to the perspectives of students, staff, university leadership, industry and public administration. The results were released on September 2.
