The University of Latvia (UL) Foundation is a stalwart carrier of philanthropic ideas and culture. Donation kiosk or ziedotne is now located in the UL House of Science lobby, Jelgavas iela 3. The surrounding environmental installation is a message about the idea of the UL House of Philanthropy.

Donation – investment in future

Opening a new donation place, the UL Rector Prof. Indriķis Muižnieks thanked patrons and co-operating partners for their support in development of the UL and emphasized that donations are investments in the future. In addition, I. Muižnieks underlined that supporting good work reciprocates the feeling of appreciation to the patron: “This way, we grow together, help the University of Latvia to fulfil its mission and contribute to improvement of our country and society”. The Chair of the UL Foundation Board Prof. Ivars Lācis added that donation primarily is not about the money, but instead about the processes and people who need this support to develop their skills and come up with new ideas. The UL will grow and develop, and the support contributing to its future is an important stimulus in this process.

UL House of Philanthropy – triumph of intelligent technologies

Just as the moss wall is real, so are the purposes funded by donations – real projects that help both UL students and researchers and the general public. Mirror wall and environmental installations under the auspices of the UL Foundation tell us about transparency and openness, which is a symbol of trust, an important facet constituting the concept of the UL House of Philanthropy. It is planned that the house will open its doors in the UL Botanical Garden at the end of 2019. The UL House of Philanthropy will be a nearly zero energy consuming building. The UL Foundation office will be located there, offering everyone interested to rent a conference room for 40 people. This will become a true testimony to the generosity of UL patrons, as almost half of the construction costs will be covered by donations. The project manager is the UL Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Optometry (PMOF) Laboratory of Mathematical Modeling of Environmental and Technological Processes (LMMETP) Prof. Andris Jakovičs.

The UL House of Philanthropy is characterized by brightness, openness and interaction, it will be a building with dynamically changing glazing. In co-operation with patrons, a new, modern and energy-efficient house will be created – a symbol of philanthropic principles and traditions.
