The University of Latvia (UL) retains excellence in the internationally renowned QS University Rankings: UL ranks among the 1.5% of the most prestigious universities in the emerging Europe and central Asia countries in the EECA ranking, and is the only one of the universities in Latvia to be included among the TOP 50, according to published data. "QS Rankings are among the world's most influential and well-known university rankings. It is a great honour to be assessed as being among the 1.5% of the most prestigious universities in the new economies and Central Asian countries, and it is a particular pleasure that we have shown commendable results in two indicators: we are influential and well-positioned on the web, as well as excel in the indicators of international cooperation," indicates the UL Deputy Rector for Students and Social Affairs Jānis Stonis. QS Rankings are based on several indicators, the most important of which are the global reputation, the reputation of the university among employers, citation statistics, the ratio of teaching staff and students, as well as the proportion of foreign students and teaching staff. For the second consecutive year, QS Rankings include four higher education institutions of Latvia. The UL this year has achieved the 50th place, Riga Technical University ranks 57th, Rīga Stradiņš University – 117th, while Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies takes the 161st to 170th place. For several years in a row, the highest assessment has been received by Lomonosov Moscow State University, while the second place is attained by Novosibirsk State University. The third place, ascending two places since the last year, is taken by Charles University in the Czech Republic. The Rankings assessed the 305 best universities in the region, of which 27 appeared on the list for the first time. As recognized by creators of the Rankings, the region covered represents one fifth of the world's territory and is becoming increasingly influential on the global market for higher education and science.
