Erasmus+ Mobility Experience in Vietnam: Academic and Cultural Exchange in Hanoi

In March 2025, Associate Professor Visvaldis Valtenbergs from the University of Latvia had the opportunity to participate in an Erasmus+ staff teaching mobility at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University in Hanoi. This visit was part of an academic cooperation initiative between the University of Latvia and this prestigious Vietnamese institution, during which lectures were delivered to students of international relations and political science.

The Erasmus+ programme provided a valuable opportunity not only to share expertise on approaches to the governance of artificial intelligence but also to gain insights into the Vietnamese higher education environment. The students' professionalism, respect for

academic procedures, and strong English language skills were particularly impressive. Traditional values—such as student uniforms and a structured class schedule—coexist seamlessly with modern academic thinking and critical reasoning skills.

Collaboration with local colleagues, particularly Dr. Nguyen Thuy Chi, played a key role in the success of the visit. Professional contacts had been established two years prior, and a memorandum of understanding signed in 2024 laid the foundation for the Erasmus+ mobility.

This visit represents an important step toward deepening academic cooperation between Latvian and Vietnamese universities. It opens the door to regular faculty exchanges and broader thematic diversity within study programmes.
