American Jewish Committee
For more than a century, American Jewish Committee has been the leading global Jewish advocacy organization. AJC works to enhance the well-being of the Jewish people and to advance human rights and democratic values for all.
The AJC has active role in bilateral relations between Latvia and the United States. The AJC supported the renewal of Latvia’s independence in 1991 and facilitated the process of Latvia’s accession to NATO and the EU in 2004.
David Harris has led AJC since 1990. Described by the late Israeli President Shimon Peres as the “foreign minister of the Jewish people,” he has been invited to speak at some of the world’s most prestigious forums. He has been honored a total of 15 times by the governments of Azerbaijan, Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Moldova, Poland, Spain, and Ukraine for his international efforts in defense of human rights, advancement of the transatlantic partnership, and dedication to the Jewish people. In 2007 he was awarded the Latvian honorary Order of Three Stars.
