An opening ceremony of the University of Latvia (UL) Confucius Institute was held at the UL Senate Hall on November 4th. During the opening ceremony, Prof. Mārcis Auziņš, Rector of the UL, signed an agreement with Guo Jie, Vice-Rector of the South China University of Pedagogy, on the establishment of the UL Confucius Institute.
The UL Confucius Institute is a study and research centre founded by the Republic of Latvia and the People's Republic of China (PRC). Both the UL and the South China (Guangzhou) University of Pedagogy have put joint efforts in setting up the Institute, under the auspices of the PRC Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban).
At the opening event, Mārcis Auziņš highlighted that the Institute will provide a great opportunity for students and professors as well as the Latvian society to learn about the Chinese culture and language.
In turn, Roberts Ķīlis, Minister for Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia, emphasized that the UL Confucius Institute is a reminder of the Chinese culture’s huge impact on lifestyle and significant historical events across the world.
During the opening ceremony, Hu Yeshun, the Chinese Ambassador to Latvia, recognized that he is honoured to participate in the UL Confucius Institute establishment, since the importance of education lies at the heart of Confucius’ philosophy.
The UL Confucius Institute aims to fulfil the Latvian education and development mission. It is set to give the Latvian society an opportunity to attain high-level proficiency in Chinese and gain a deeper understanding of China’s traditional culture, which is inseparable from modern China's success in the new century. The Institute will offer Chinese lessons and insight into the Chinese literature, history and traditions as well as the Chinese martial art and national cuisine courses.
The UL Confucius Institute will be chaired by Pēteris Pildegovičs, sinologist and former Latvian Ambassador to China.
The Institute is to be situated on the second floor of the University of Latvia premises at Raiņa Blvd. 19.
