The Medical Faculty of the University of Latvia has finished its activities for this year, with 143 new doctors, nurses, and pharmacists receiving their diplomas.

“Among this year’s graduates are many strong medical professionals who will have to confirm their abilities and the hopes that are pinned on them in the workplace. I’m extremely happy that regardless of the difficult situation, both in the country and the medical system, these new specialists are full of enthusiasm and are not only ready to continue their studies at master’s level, doctoral level and in residence, but are also keen to work in their specialty, investing in the development of the medical field in Latvia.” stressed the dean of the LU MF, Professor Ingrīda Rumba-Rozenfelde.

24 students, including 11 foreigners, graduated from the LU Faculty of Medicine’s second-level professional study programme in Medicine. 32 students graduated from the bachelor’s study programme in pharmacology, and 27 graduated from the master’s programme in this discipline. The nursing programme saw 89 new graduates get their bachelor’s degree, with one student receiving a master’s degree in nursing.

In the 2008/2009 academic year, 851 students studied at the LU MT, among them students from the USA, Germany, Switzerland, Finland, Norway, Great Britain, Estonia, India, Japan, Lebanon, Pakistan, Syria and Thailand.

Every year students from the LU MF take part in LLP/ERASMUS education programmes, which offer students the opportunity to study in a university of another EU country for a period ranging from 3 months to a whole academic year. Within the framework of these programmes, the faculty has formed especially strong ties with two Swedish institutions; namely, the Karoliniska Institute and Upsala University.

Next to recognized luminaries of Latvian medicine, many new and talented instructors work in the LU MF. Guest lecturers from Sweden, Germany, and the USA also give lectures.
