Professor Ivars Ījabs will carry out research at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. The theme of his research is "Politics of Memory and Democratization: the Role of Civil Society."
The professor’s speciality in political science is "memory politics", which is the question of how recently founded democratic states deal with their authoritarian past, and how they work with the memory and phenomenon of their recent history.
Anna Mezaka, a scientific assistant at the Faculty of Biology at the University of Latvia will conduct her research in ecology. "To my mind, the USA is a place where the natural sciences are well developed. Moreover, there is a wide range of sciences where one can improve one‘s knowledge - knowledge which can later be passed on to students in Latvia.“
The third scholarship recipient is Arturs Kucs, head of the Faculty of Law’s International Law Department at the University of Latvia. He will conduct his research at the University of Connecticut on the theme "Balancing the freedom of expression and hate speech: legal doctrine and case-law in the United States."
Former U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright established the Fulbright program in 1946. The goal of the program is to increase mutual understanding among the people of the United States and the people of other countries.
The U.S. Embassy invites qualified Latvian students and researchers to participate in the competition for next year's scholarships. The embassy will announce the next competition for the Fulbright program in August.
