The University of Latvia’s research project 2008/ZP-122 “The Development and Modernization of Phenological Observation Networks in Latvia”, which is being carried out within the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences, has seen a start being made to the modernization of the phenological monitoring network through the use of photo monitoring.
This is one of the newest, most economical, and yet most effective methods for carrying out phenological observations.
The first photo-monitoring point is located in the university’s botanical gardens. An autonomous, digitally programmed camera has been set up to record daily changes in the landscape. It should be noted that this is an innovative method as this is the first camera of its kind in the Baltics. Anyone interested in seeing images from the botanical garden can visit this site:

Two more of these cameras are to be installed within the remit of this project: one in ‘Lodesmuiža’ – the field station of the department of geography and earth sciences, and one in Auce, both of which will be used in research of regional changes.
