The University of Latvia Student Wins a Translation Contest

The final of the contest took place on the premises of “Skrivanek Baltic” Language School in which students had to translate a text of approximately 200 words from the selected foreign language into Latvian without any supporting materials. The works were evaluated by “Skrivanek Baltic” translators and proofreaders who determined that the University of Latvia student Dace Kruste was the best translator and her prize included the opportunity to use “Skrivanek Baltic” E-learning for a year free of charge as well as to study any foreign language of her choice. Second and third place winners - Evija Rubene from the University of Latvia and Anta Skrastiņa from the University College of Economics and Culture – were awarded gift cards from “Skrivanek Baltic” Language School. “It was a really great surprise, as I have never won any contests before! Since my plans for future involve translation and work for the European Union, the prize will be very useful. I just have to decide whether E-learning courses will help me perfect my English language knowledge or if I will start learning French,” said the best new translator of the year Dace Kruste. In the contest she translated from the German language and admitted that German is particularly close to her heart. “It is safe to say that this year’s finalists are the best new translators because the competition this year was fiercer than the previous year with students participating from five Latvian higher education institutions,” was pointed out by Aiga Veckalne, the director of “Skrivanek Baltic”. The New Translators Contest was organized by “Skrivanek Baltic” in collaboration with five Latvian universities - University of Latvia, Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences, Ventspils University College, Daugavpils University and University College of Economic and Culture.
