University of Latvia Participates in the Project on Climate Change

The major partner of the project is the Geological Survey of Finland. The participants of the project are the scientific institutes, such as the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and others. The University of Latvia and North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve administration represent Latvia in the project. This project follows up INTERREG III B project ASTRA whose aim was to determine the possible climate change impact on different areas within the Baltic Sea region as well as to enhance public awareness on this matter.  The aim of BaltCICA 2009-2011 is to integrate most recent research and development into decision making process, focusing on cost efficiency and particularly on the spatial development of different scales.  Within the project, the working group of the LU Faculty of Geography and Earth Sciences will make an assessment of the local climate change impact and elaborate on the national climate change adaptation strategy, eventually, by help of the territorial planning tools, developing the guidelines for climate change adaptation. 
Additionally, under the project a new exposition on climate change in the world and the Baltic Sea region will be established in North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve to educate the visitors, particularly the youth and the coastal population, on climate change issues.  Fifteen project participants from eleven countries held a workshop in the University of Latvia and in Salacgrīva from 31^st August to 2^nd September, 2009.
