Oskars Gruziņš member of the European Union's Marie Curie Initial Training Network, "Children born of war – past, present and future project" (CHIBOW), from University of Latvia, participated at the project's Advanced Training Courses (ATC) 1&2 at the University of Graz, in Austria.
From February the 1st to the 5th 2016, Oskars Gruziņš participated at the project's first set of training courses. The week of training consisted of courses on subjects in relation to the overall project and Oskars' working package, which will be a study on children born of Nazi and Soviet soldiers in Latvia.
The early stage researchers (ESR) had the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals who have done studies on children born of war with the use of oral history, qualitative and quantitative research, policy study and more. The five day training covered a variety of subjects: "Introduction into oral history interview principles, forms, and methods", "Data collection: sampling strategies, from large scale population based representative samples to small samples from hidden populations", "An introduction into video history from a social-historical perspective: preparation, documentation, praxis, follow-up", "Ethics in research", "Integration interviews in the research process: designing, delivering and analyzing interviews", "The concept of narrative identity: analysis and methodology", "An introduction into interviewing techniques from a psychological perspective", "Practical training-interviews, video analysis, feedback", "How to design a questionnaire: from research questions to a questionnaire", "Oral history interviews in the media archive" as well as several kinds of practical trainings. The courses were led by the projects organizations, partner organizations, as well as guest lecturers. In addition to the training, the mayor of Graz invited the group to City Hall for a reception and they enjoyed a WWII tour of the city.
This training will tie into Oskars' Ph.D. project, which is part of the European Union Marie Curie Initial Training Network, "Children born of war – past, present and future project." This project is a Horizon 2020 plan which is composed of 15 early stage researchers, 11 organizations, 12 partner organizations, with an aim at "understanding the challenges of CHIBOW in volatile societies [that] will inform the normative debates and, ultimately, policies on the reintegration of CHIBOW into post-conflict societies."
