Released Heinz Vater’s Work: Introduction to Linguistics

In November 2010, the publishing house “Zinātne” released a very useful source for philology students: Heinz Vater’s, Professor of Germanic Linguistics Introduction to Linguistics. The original book was first published in 2002. It comprises not only the key issues of linguistics, but also the recent research trends and methods. Thus, Introduction to Linguistics can be used not only as study literature in Bachelor studies, but also as specific fundamental book in further linguistics studies in Master or Doctoral study programme.  

The extensive literature list both in English and German gives a quite comprehensive overview about well-known linguists’ contribution to the field development. Being aware of the necessity to domesticate the source text to the Latvian audience, the author agreed with the explanatory additions and comments in the target text. The work was translated by Dr. of Philology UL Associate Professor of the Faculty of Humanitas well as Germanist Dr. Philol. Dzintra Lele-Rozentale from Ventspils University College. The translator worked on the specific issues in separate branches of linguistics, for example, phonology, neiro-linguistics and psycholinguistics together with several other Latvian scientists, including the UL scientists: Dr. Philol. Juris Grigorjevs, Dr. habil. med. Maris Baltins and Artis Svece. Thus, the translation can be considered as a joint venture of Latvian scientists, where particularly the FH academic staff made a great contribution. It is the first significant project of the newly established UL Faculty between the inter-branches of Germanistics and Baltistics. Hopefully, it will serve as an example of successful cooperation and stimulate other creative professional and uniting events at the Faculty, as well as encourage more extensive cooperation with scientists from other universities and institutions. The translation was possible thanks to the cooperation with the publishing house “Zinātne” and the financial support of the Latvian Language Agency (LLA). Furthermore, in cooperation with LLA Heinz Vater’s visit to Latvia is planned for May, 2011. On May 8-15, 2011, Prof. Heinz Vater will visit universities in Riga, Daugavpils and Liepaja, presenting his readings in English and leading discussions on topical issues in linguistics (follow the UL homepage announcements). The Latvian translation of the work is also available in the bookshop “Zinātne” located in the building of the Latvian Academy of Sciences.
