The Institute of Atomic Physics and Spectroscopy at the University of Latvia with the assistance of the European Social Fund is currently working on the Biophotonics Study Group Project. Within the Project scientists are developing devices and new technologies to diagnose heart, circulation of blood and skin tumours, such as a free programme “Mobile PPG” developed to measure the heart rate using NOKIA mobile phones.

The heart monitoring procedure is as follows: place your finger on the phone’s built-in video camera and direct it to an external source of light such as a desk lamp or the sun. Your skin blood volume pulsations will be calculated and appear on the screen of the mobile phone. Programme users, irrespective of their age, may determine both the resting heart rate and the exercise heart rate using only a mobile phone. The programme is free and can be downloaded from the NOKIA Ovi Store. Programme description is available in English.
