The University of Latvia (UL) offers a wide variety of sports activities to make students’ life more interesting and exciting, as well as provides each student with the opportunity to strengthen or improve their health.

The sports life of the University is organized by the UL Sports Centre, which is located in the Olympic Sports Centre (Riga, 6b Grostonas Street). The Centre serves as the sports basis of the UL students. In addition, the sports life of the University is also held in sports complex Arkadija and the Daugava Stadium. Gym-halls of UL faculties are also open for students. UL offers 14 different sports facilities which enable students to practice almost any kind of sport. In fact, whether you are a professional athlete, you want to exercise to stay fit or you want to take part in sport recreationally, there is a sporting opportunity for you. Sports activities are led by qualified staff several times per week offering a flexible training schedule. Students can apply for training in

In addition with the daily training, there are also competitions in the leading sports. As a UL tradition, the basketball, football and volleyball leagues take place throughout the entire study year. Each year UL also organizes open-air competitions, night tournaments in music rhythms, cheerleaders’ dances, and others. The best athletes are included in the UL team that participates in international and national championships to defend the University at a higher level. The benefits of being classified as the best students of the UL team may include priority of lowering tuition fees. UL is the first higher education institution in Latvia that provides students with qualitative and competitive education and at the same time gives an opportunity to reach one’s highest potential in sport. For example, in cooperation with the football school METTA, the football team FS METTA/LU (Latvijas Universitāte) was established. The best football players of the University play in the 1st league. Even secondary school students can claim participation in the team if they prove capable of playing at such level and plan to study at the University of Latvia. The football team has professional training and are fully equipped to perfect their playing and aim for the national team. The same is true speaking about basketball, volleyball and floorball teams. International students join the International students’ football team ET, which plays in the indoor UL Football League. UL Football League is organized according to the indoor football rules of UL. All players are students of UL (International as well), staff and administration of UL. Last season ET won the honourable third place among 18 teams. More active students can also work in the Sports Centre – they have an opportunity to be not only participants or spectators, but gain valuable experience in an exciting sports environment.
