The University of Latvia (UL) earned four stars in overall evaluation and was assessed in seven principal categories, receiving five stars in Teaching, Internationalization, Facilities and Innovation, four in Employability and Inclusiveness, three in Research and two stars in Specialist Criteria. The UL was under extensive evaluation beginning from August 2014 until April 2015, when the results were published.
Among other universities in Europe that have earned four stars, are such respectable higher education institutions as the University of Liege in Belgium (ranked 272 in the QS Top Universities), University of Coimbra in Portugal (ranked 351 in the QS Top Universities) and Alcala University in Spain (ranked 651 in the QS Top Universities). The University of Latvia outran both Vilnius Gediminas Technical University in Lithuania (three stars) and Vytautas Magnus University in Lithuania (two stars).
The total number of points a university can earn is 1,000. The universities rated with 'Five Star plus' have a minimum of 900 points, those that earned five stars have 700 points and more. The University of Latvia and other universities with four stars have 550 points and more. The UL was 78 points short of earning five stars.
Highest evaluated indicators in Teaching category for the UL are Overall student satisfaction and Satisfaction with teaching. In the Employability category the UL received maximum points for Graduate employability. The UL research quality was rated with maximum points in the category of Prolific academic experts, revealing the institution's share of staff that has received international distinction in their area of expertise. Analysis of the Research category indicators shows that chemistry is one of the highest rated areas of expertise at the UL. Internationalization of the UL was rated with the maximum number of points within such areas as Institution research collaborations, International diversity and Inbound and Outbound exchange students. Evaluation report strongly welcomed availability of sports facilities, IT infrastructure and library facilities at the UL. All three criteria within the Innovation category received the maximum number of points, while inclusiveness of the UL was rated highest for the scholarships' availability for students.
