In 2009, the UL students participated in the 7th Study Aid for the second time. It took place in Latvia from November 5 to December 5.
The UL Library also took part in the Study Aid, providing opportunity to students of supporting this charity event. It was possible to participate in the Study Aid by visiting the reading rooms of the UL Library’s Multi-branch Library, Library of Economics, Library of the Humanities, Library of Education and Psychology, and Library of the Faculty of Social Sciences.
The 7th International Study Aid was held throughout the world this year, with the participation of 14 countries from Europe, Africa, and South America. Study Aid is an international project created by the Spanish non-governmental organization “Coopera” and first took place in Logrono, Spain in 2003. Study Aid aims to involve young people in the solidarity project making use of the time spent studying. This activity is based on the classic saying “Time is money”. The contribution of students is the hours spent studying; various private and national sponsors contribute money corresponding to the study hours. In such a way students can demonstrate their solidarity and civic involvement, they have a chance to participate in an international collaboration using the available resources as well as acquire a new way to make learning more interesting. A total of 831 people participated in Study Aid in the reading rooms of the UL Library, spending 4368 hours studying and collecting a donation of 4368 Euros. In general, 1353 young people of Latvia took part in Study Aid this year helping to collect almost 7000 Euros for the education project in Angola. In the framework of Study Aid, similar events took place in 13 other countries collecting 312 729 Euros in 2009. The money will be spent on equipping schools’ technical workshops in Haiti, on the centre for socially excluded children in rural areas, young people’s advancement and women’s support in Cameroon, on child and adolescent learning centre in Angola, and on professional training of young people in Ecuador.
