Rolands Juraševskis, director of the UL folk dance ensemble “Dancis”, admits, “Nowadays, when people are mostly busy with many different practical and material things, International Dance Day can give us the much needed joy and positive emotions. We hope to see also people who do not attend dance concerts regularly, thus widening the circle of dance fans, which actually is the aim of International Dance Day.”
On April 29, during the concert dedicated to International Dance Day, the UL folk dance ensamble “Dancis” and the middle generation dance group “Dancis” will dance both the so-called classic folk dances – “Es mācēju danci vest”, “Ai, tēvu zeme” by U. Žagata, “Gatves deja” and “Rucavietis” by H. Tangijeva-Birzniece, etc. – and more recent dances – the dance suite “Suitu mēlē” by R. Spalva, “Pēc tolkas” by E. Polis, “Meitu māte” by J. Ērglis, “Visi ciema kukainīši” by A. Puriņš, “Kā cīrulim” by J. Purviņš, etc. The UL vocal ensemble “Dancis” will also perform at the concert. The concert is supported by the Education, Culture and Sports Department of Riga City Council and the University of Latvia.
Tickets for the concert are available at the box-offices of Biļešu Serviss, on www.bilesuserviss.lv, and one hour before the concert – at the entrance to the UL Great Hall, ticket price – 2 Ls. See you at the UL Great Hall (19 Raiņa Boulevard, Riga) on April 29, at 19 o’clock!

In 1982 the UNESCO International Dance Committee proclaimed April 29 an International Dance Day. Since then it has been celebrated as dance festivals all over the world. Dance concerts, workshops, lectures, exhibitions and other events are organized on the occasion of International Dance Day. This year International Dance Day will be celebrated for the 28th time and, as indicated by the UNESCO director-general I. Bokova, it is time to see the world through a new prism of humanism, giving a response to globalization and crisis in order to preserve social unity and peace throughout the world. Dance is an essential part of every culture; it brings people together while maintaining diversity.
