The programme “Written Translation” of the University of Latvia has obtained the European Master’s in Translation network quality mark

The Professional Master’s Study Programme “Written Translation” (formerly – professional study programme “Translator”) has obtained the European Master’s in Translation (EMT) network quality mark, thus becoming one of the 20 new network participants in the competition among 64 programmes.

“This quality mark, also granted to the study programme implemented by the University of Latvia, will further help enterprises and institutions across Europe to orientate themselves in a large number of various translation programmes. This certificate gives employers an opportunity to recognize which of the educational institutions offer qualitative translator training in compliance with the European criteria. As a result, the graduates of the Programme gain a competitive education in the international labour market,” says Gunta Locmele, Head of the Department of Contrastive Linguistics, Translation and Interpreting at the UL Faculty of Humanities. She adds that such quality mark is owned just by two other university programmes in the Baltic States.

The European Master’s in Translation network was created following the European Commission’s initiative. It unifies the written translation Master’s programmes of the European Union countries and also one non-community country (Switzerland), which have been granted the European Master’s in Translation network quality mark. The mark is granted if the programmes comply with the translation programme quality criteria set by the network – they provide theoretical and practical knowledge required by the labour market; they employ qualified academic staff; they apply most recent translation strategies; they are innovative; they have international contacts and cooperation with employers both on a local and international scale.

Besides, the UL Programme in Written Translation is also a member of the Erasmus academic network OPTIMALE (Optimising Professional Translator Training in a Multilingual Europe).
