
The main events of the anniversary programme will be opened on September 24th with a conference on the development of historical science at LU. Friday, September 25th at 11:00 sees the start of an international conference, the closing conference of L.Bērziņš’s creative pedagogical work competition. Later that evening, there will be two events from which to choose: at 18:00 in the café of the LU main building a science café will be held entitled The Limit of Endurance. The topic under discussion will be the limits of endurance of living things, especially those of human beings. At 19:00, however, in the Grand Hall of the university there will be a concert given by the Choir of the University of Prague and the LU choir Jubilate.
On Saturday, 26th September at 1 Raina Boulevard at 11:00 the LU TLMS exhibition "Vāpe" will be opened. One hour later, at 12:00, the LU Rector, Professor Mārcis Auziņš; the Minister for Education and Science, Professor Tatjana Koķe; and the chairman of the Advisory Board of the University of Latvia, the director of Prudential Supervision, Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority, Uldis Cērps will open the conference A University in a Small Country and a Wide World. An address will also be given by ex-State President, LU Professor Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga. On the eve of the anniversary, on September 27th, an event to promote LU doctoral students will take place.
The day of the anniversary will start at 10:00 with an ecumenical church service in the Dome Cathedral. The service will be taken by Jānis Vanags, the archbishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia; Cardinal Jānis Pujats, the archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church; and Alexander, Metropolitan of the Latvian Orthodox Church. At 12:00 at the LU History Museum an exhibition will be opened, but at 12:45 a sun clock and Riga’s first geodetic zero point will be ceremoniously revealed on top of a roof platform.
Continuing the celebrations, at 12:45 there will be a ceremonial sitting of the LU Senate. During the sitting, LU honorary fellows, honorary doctors, and honorary professors will be greeted, and awards will be presented, including the LU Golden Coat of Arms and the LU Fund Ceļamaizes (Bread for the Journey) student stipend. The proceedings will be closed with a festive concert at the National Opera at 19:00. Half an hour before the start of the concert, a celebratory torch will be lit by the Opera house.
