The Master's study program in Chemistry provides students with modern, in-depth theoretical knowledge, as well as practical and research skills in the main areas of chemistry and one selected sub-discipline. Students in the program can choose chemistry sub-discipline for their specialization: analytical, physical, or organic and biomolecular chemistry. The program is based on a student-centred approach, which focuses on the students’ learning process, the development of their responsibility for the results in learning and research. The planned study outcomes, which students must be able to demonstrate after successful completion of the Master's program are based on bachelor’s competencies, which are extended and developed further in the Master's program, emphasizing scientific research and providing basis for independent decision-making and the application of the gained knowledge and skills in practice.

Our program employs the best experts of Latvia in the fields of analytical, physical, and organic, and biomolecular chemistry, as well as visiting professors from Lithuanian and Italian universities.

The program offers students  exchange opportunities with 26 ERASMUS+ cooperation universities in 12 European and EEA countries.

The program engages practitioners and professionals from various institutions to teach individual lectures in study courses to promote the unity of theory and practice. This helps provide students with a greater degree of practical knowledge and skills, increasing their competitiveness in  global labor markets, as well as the necessary skills to carry out research in academic and industrial laboratories.
 

Career opportunities

The programme prepares highly qualified specialists for employment as professionals in chemical industries, research or governmental organizations as well as for continuation of studies in the Doctoral programme. Potential workplaces in Latvia have been identified and are as follows: chemical and pharmaceutical production companies (for example, the joint-stock company "Grindeks", the joint-stock company "Olainfarm"), scientific research institutions (for example, the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis, the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry, Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology, Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment "BIOR"), quality control and forensic laboratories, environmental protection services and educational institutions, as well as various companies (trade, consulting) related to chemistry and natural sciences. Most students find their job already during their studies, but traditionally it is a part-time job in various research laboratories compatible with studies.

Admission requirements

  1. Version 1 of previous education: first-cycle higher education (bachelor's degree or second-level professional higher education (or equivalent education)) in chemistry, chemical technology, pharmacy, food technology, material science and biotechnology. The formula for calculating the competition score is: weighted average grade + total (or average) grade of the final exams.
  2. Version 2 of previous education: first-cycle higher education (bachelor's degree or second-level professional higher education (or equivalent education)) in natural sciences, engineering. Formula for calculating the competition score: entrance exam results. 
  3. The average grade in study courses must be 60% of the maximum. 
  4. All grades must be passing (at least 4 in a 10 point grading system).
  5. English language proficiency.
 

As a part of the admission process applicants will be asked to participate in an online interview.
