The aim of the programme is to ensure the training of highly academically and scientifically qualified graduates of Latvian linguistics and language technology, literary and culture (folklore and theatre) studies at master’s level, who will shape the future cultural and linguistic space of Latvia, will creatively and independently apply scientific theories and methods in academic and professional contexts, will acknowledge the role of and locate their study field in a wide range of issues in the humanities; to prepare graduates for doctoral studies, as well as for work in various scientific, cultural and other institutions in Latvia and abroad.
The study programme tasks:
- regularly promote the acquisition of new, modern and interdisciplinary knowledge and research methods that motivate students to engage in research and encourage the continuation of exploring Latvian Studies in the doctoral study programme “Language and Culture Studies”;
- develop the ability of students to independently acquire, critically analyze and apply the acquired knowledge, link theory with practice, and demonstrate the opportunities for using the acquired knowledge, skills, and competences in the labour market.
The programme is characterized by its academic staff - the country's leading scholars, whose writings are well known to researchers of Latvian language and culture in Latvia and abroad.

The study programme offers the possibility to study mandatory courses and restricted elective courses from the first semester: Project Management in the Humanities and the Creative Industries; Digital Humanities and Social Sciences; Cultural heritage and new identities; Language and Literature in the Context of Totalitarianism; Literary Editing and Language Practice; Stylistics and Text-Formation.
We will also offer double degree opportunities in Baltic Studies in cooperation with Vilnius University.
After the Master's studies, it is possible to enroll in doctoral studies and/or work in research institutes, Latvian museums, publishing houses, mass media, state and local government institutions, translation and editing agencies.
First-cycle higher education or second-cycle professional higher education, applicable after secondary education.
UL full-time students, regardless of their citizenship, have the opportunity to apply for the ERASMUS + exchange program for studies or/and traineeship.
