Following the amendments to the Law on Higher Education Institutions, which came into force on 01.01.2019, the term accreditation of study programs has been extended. The new accreditation deadlines can be seen here.
The goal of the geography doctoral study program is to prepare highly qualified scientific specialists and teaching staff in geography, as well as highly skilled industry professionals with internationally comparable competence in the field of geography and an internationally comparable doctoral degree in sciences, providing the economy with qualified employees.
The most essential in the doctoral study program is the student's scientific research work, including literature studies, data and material acquisition and analysis, publication preparation and dissertation writing. At the same time, students learn theoretical courses, participate in scientific seminars, present their work results at scientific conferences, and assist in geography bachelor's and master's study programs.

The DSP Geography offers studies in the following sub-fields of geography:
- human geography;
- natural geography;
- geomatics and applied geography;
- regional geography and environmental geography.
The result of the doctoral study program in geography is highly qualified researchers whose level of competence and skills in science is comparable to the qualification level of scientists in the leading universities of the EU member states and who are capable of solving nationally essential problems in various fields of geography.
Graduates of the program are employed in state institutions, Latvian and foreign universities, research institutes, and private companies.
