The Bachelor's program in Physics develops students' understanding of the physical laws that govern the surrounding world and technologies. It fosters creativity, critical thinking, experimental skills, as well as abilities in physical and mathematical modelling, preparing students for careers in research, industry, education, and other fields. The acquired skills and level of comprehension enable graduates to pursue Master's studies in Physics or related fields, including at some of the world's top universities, or to apply them directly in innovative companies. Studies take place in modern lecture halls and laboratories, with a student-centred approach and the use of contemporary teaching methods. The instructors are internationally active scientists who have obtained their doctoral degrees and work experience at reputable foreign universities.

In the mandatory part of the programme, you will study general physics, modern physics, programming, experimental data processing, experiment management, astronomy and astrophysics, chemistry, biology. If you wish, you will be able to study electronics, nanoscience, elementary particle physics, higher mathematics, application of computer modelling and machine learning in physics, as well as history of physics. You will have a chance to apply the acquired knowledge through an internship in a company or a scientific institute, and you will conduct a study for your bachelor's thesis. You will gain international study experience by taking the opportunity to study part of the programme at partner universities in other European countries.

Students begin to work in the sphere of their specialisation from the first year of studies or within the internship courses and, at the end of their studies, all graduates have work experience in the field of physics. Bachelors of physics are employed by companies, institutes, public administration, schools and universities in Latvia and abroad, as well as form their own companies and startups. It is an interesting and dynamic work environment that provides opportunities for further development.

  • Option – 15% CE in Latvian + 10% CE in English or CE in French, or CE in German + 5% CE in mathematics* + 70% CE in physics.

* For persons who have completed secondary education before 2008, the centralized examination (CE) in mathematics may be replaced by the annual grade in mathematics indicated in the secondary education document (or the average grade in algebra and geometry)

Competition criteria for persons who have completed secondary education up to 2004 (excluding), as well as for those who have acquired secondary education abroad or persons with special needs:

20% annual average grade in Latvian language and literature + 60% annual grade in mathematics (or average grade in algebra and geometry) or physics + 20% annual average grade in particular subjects.

Special condition: the secondary education document must contain an annual grade in physics which is not below almost satisfactory (at least 4 points).

Additional points: Participants of the UL School of Young Physicists in 2021, who have received a certificate, receive an additional 100 points; Graduates of the UL “School of Excellence” science class in 2021, who have received a certificate, receive an additional 50 points.
