The aim of the Bachelor's study programme "History and Archaeology" is to provide students with theoretical knowledge and research skills and competences in the field of history. During the studies, the students will develop an understanding of the processes of general and Latvian history and will acquire basic research skills, especially those related to the acquisition, analysis and use of information.
The study programme also includes a number of practice-oriented courses, giving students the opportunity to become directly involved in the work of the field of history and archaeology.

 

Study Programme Director

The program consists of compulsory (Part A) courses: a) general and Latvian history from prehistory to the present day, b) courses that develop research skills: archaeological, museum, archival praxis, introduction to the research in history and archaeology, c) introductory courses in archaeology and auxiliary historical sciences.

In turn, optional (Part B) courses mostly consist of three thematic blocks: 1) courses about the topical research directions in history and archaeology (social, cultural, military, etc. history, social and environmental archaeology), 2) courses on the history of various regions and countries of the world (f. e., history of the Nordic countries, Germany, the Western world, Russia), 3) courses that focus on specific historical problems, processes and phenomena (courses about heraldry, numismatics, cultural heritage, history of Vikings, etc.).

Graduates of the program have the option to continue their studies in the Master's program in History or to join a research institution in the field of history. Additionally, they have ample opportunities to work in other fields that require critical thinking and information analysis, such as public administration, foreign affairs, public relations, and media.

UL full-time students, regardless of their citizenship, have the opportunity to apply for the ERASMUS + exchange program for studies or/and traineeship.
