Bachelor's study programme "English, European Languages and Business Studies"

The programme consists of three sub-programmes which students choose before starting their studies:

  • English Language
    It is a classical study programme in English studies which provides knowledge in general and applied linguistics, literary and culture studies studies of the main anglophone regions- the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Canada as well as develops high level communicative competence in English and other European languages (French, Spanish, German, Swedish or Norwegian). It is offered as a full-time and part-time study mode.
     
  • English-Scandinavian Languages
    In addition to English studies, students acquire knowledge about Swedish and Norwegian cultural heritage as well as develop high-level communicative competence in English, Swedish or Norwegian. In the academic year 2025/2026, students will acquire Norwegian as a second language. It is offered only as a full-time mode.
     
  • European Languages and Business Studies
    The sub-programme provides knowledge about the English language, British, American or Canadian culture, basic principles of business and economics, develops intercultural communication skills, entrepreneurship skills, team work and other transversal skills as well as high-level communicative competence in English and other European languages (French, Spanish, German, Swedish or Norwegian). The programme is implemented in cooperation with the Faculty of Business, Management and Economics of UL in a full-time and part-time study mode.

All three sub-programs include the following courses:
English Grammar; English Lexicology; English Phonetics and Phonolog; English for Academic Studies; Text Analysis; Introduction to Linguistics and English Language Studies; English Phonetics and Phonology; EU Institutional and Project Management Discourse; Research Project and Methodology.

Sub-program “English Language":
History of Literature and Culture: from Medieval to Enlightenment Literature; English and American Literature and Culture History; English for Communication in Arts; Introduction to Literary and Culture Studies; Translation of Applied Texts: Theory and Practice; USA or Canadian Cultural Studies; Culture and Media Studies.

Sub-program “English - Scandinavian Languages”:
Scandinavian Literature and Culture History I: Sweden until the 19th Century; Entrepreneurship Discourse in Scandinavian Culture; History of Literature and Culture: from Medieval to Enlightenment Literature; Introduction to Literary and Culture Studies; Translation of Applied Texts: Theory and Practice; USA or Canadian Cultural Studies; Culture and Media Studies.

Sub-program “European Languages and Business Studies”:
Microeconomics; Macroeconomics; Translation of Applied Texts: Theory and Practice; Language, culture and project discourse; Business Communication; Business English for International Examinations.

Study period and time of classes

  • The full-time studies are accomplished in three academic years. Classes are mainly from 8.30am to 6pm on working days.
  • The part-time studies are accomplished in four academic years. Classes are held 3 times a month on Saturdays from 10am to 6pm.

The programme has been developed within the framework of the project "Design of Internationally Competitive Study Programmes Promoting the Development of the National Economy of Latvia at the University of Latvia" (project No. 8.2.1.0 / 18 / A / 015).

   

The programme prepares the graduates for different careers in the public and private sector in the local and international labour market, where the application of profound knowledge of foreign languages, literature and culture in applied social contexts such as education, business, law, the art, politics and the media are required. The graduates are employed as translators, content managers, editors, assistants to department and project managers, teachers in language centres and universities.

Tuition fee per year - 2500 EUR for EU/EEA/Swiss citizens, permanent residence permit holders and their family members. Tuition fee per year - 3350 EUR for citizens of other countries
Autumn semester 2024: state-funded study places - 25.
Bachelor of Humanities in English and Language Studies

Admission requirements

  1. General secondary high school diploma;
  2. English language proficiency
  3. The average grade of the secondary education document in all subjects must be at least 6 (in a 10 point grading system).
  4. All grades must be passing (at least 4 in a 10 point grading system).
  5. By presenting proof of Latvian language, you can compete for a state-financed study place. Please see criteria below. 

Enrollment criteria (for students competing for the state-financed study place)

  1. The grade in English (45%);
  2. Grade point average (20%);
  3. Satisfactory grade in Mathematics (20%)
  4. Latvian language test (15%).

Please note! Only EU/EEA/Swiss citizens and EU long-term resident status holders can compete for a state-financed study place.
 

As a part of the admission process applicants will be asked to participate in an online interview.
