Dentistry - second-cycle professional higher education study program

The study program prepares qualified specialists, whose theoretical and practical skills are appropriate to start practicing in General Dentistry independently. Upon successful completion of the program, the student acquires competencies in the examination of the condition of teeth and mouth, documentation of the obtained data, diagnosis and treatment planning of diseases of the mouth, face, and jaw area, restoration of tooth shape, function and aesthetics, etc. Graduates have complete knowledge of the structure and functions of healthy and damaged teeth, alveolar growth, oral mucosa, jaws, and related tissues, their connection to the patient's general health, physical and social well-being.

   

The study programme comprises several components like biomedical subjects, common to medicine and dentistry- progressing from cell biology and biochemistry to anatomy and physiology of the human body, pharmacology, pathology, microbiology, epidemiology and related sciences like psychology, ethics and practice management.

Appreciation of human development, structure, function, pathology, diagnosis and treatment of diseases will be taught in modular form based on the systems of human body. Oral and dental aspects of the biological sciences will ensure detailed knowledge of the structure and function of the oral and dental tissues and the related structures of the head and neck. These should lead to a progressive understanding of the diagnosis, causes, prevention and treatment of oral and dental diseases and disorders, and the effects of systemic disease on oral and dental tissues.

To obtain experience of the practice of dentistry, development students' clinical and manual skills, the clinical part has a significant role in the study plan. Clinical training includes treatment of patients under the supervision of clinical instructors. Clinical practice takes place in the 7th and 10th semester.

After obtaining a the degree and a professional certificate, graduates are entitled to begin working independently in health centers, private practices ot to establish their own practice. Graduates have access to residency or doctoral studies.

Completed Secondary Education

Competition criteria for persons with an obtained secondary education in LATVIA on year 2004 and onwards:
CE in Latvian
CE in Physics or CE in Chemistry, or CE in Biology
CE in English or CE in French, or CE in German
CE in Maths*
Average score of all CE passed by the person
* For persons who have completed secondary education before 2008, the centralized examination in mathematics may be replaced by the annual mark of the secondary education document in mathematics (or the average mark in algebra and geometry).

Competition criteria for persons with an obtained secondary education up to year 2004 (not included) as well as persons who have obtained their secondary education ABROAD and persons with special needs:

1.    Final grade in Chemistry (at least 60% or 6 out of 10)
2.    Final grade in Biology (at least 60% or 6 out of 10)
3.    Final grade in English (at least 60% or 6 out of 10)
OR – if the applicant hasn’t studied either Chemistry or Biology
1.    Final grade in Natural sciences (at least 60% or 6 out of 10)
2.    Final grade in English (at least 60% or 6 out of 10)
The grades will be compared to the grading system in Latvia so each specific case will be reviewed individually.
Since studies take place in English, the applicants need to be able to demonstrate good knowledge of English language.
