History

Basketball at the University of Latvia has long traditions. Despite the achievements in history, during the free state, university basketball was not so visible, however, in the last decade, step by step, revolutions are being made and UL basketball is again at the highest level in both men's and women's competition.

Basketball, whose beginnings can be traced back to 1891. USA, returned to Latvia in 1920. In the Latvian championships, which began in 1923. and ended in 1924. 6 units participated. The 5th place was won by the Academic Sports Association of the University of Latvia (LUASB).

The activities of the Latvian Basketball Association (LBS), which was founded in 1923, were mostly led by students of the University of Latvia.

  • Already in the 1930s, the basketball players of the University of Latvia have experienced many victories. In the period from 1930 - 1936 The men's team of LU has won the title of Latvian champion and during this period the title of Riga champions has been won. The LU women's national team won the Riga championship in 1932 and then repeated this achievement in 1940. During the first independence of Latvia, the sports teams of the University of Latvia were widely known as "University Sports".
  • In the thirties, the men's team of the University of Latvia, representing Riga, took part in a foreign tour of Europe, winning several victories.
  • From 1934 - 1940 7 times the LU women's team was in the honor of Latvian champions.
  • In 1938, basketball was hosted for the first time in the SELL (Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) master competition program of the Baltic student union.
  • 1947/1948 The women's and men's teams of LVU (Latvian State University) won 1st place in the LPSR student spartakiade. Women won 2nd place in the national championship.
  • 1951 Both LVU women's and men's teams won the Latvian Cup.
  • 1952 LVU men's and women's teams won the titles of champions in the Riga city championships.
  • 1953 and 1954 The All-Union Sports Spartakiad of Higher Educational Institutions was held in Moscow. Basketball players won 1st place.
  • 1954 LVU basketball players became champions in the national championship for the second year in a row.
  • 1955 The LVU women's team won 1st place in the LPSR championship.
  • 1966/1967 LVU women's and men's teams won the first places in the LPSR student spartakiade.
  • The end of the eighties can be considered the triumph of basketball teams.
  • 1986/87 The LVU women's team won all possible gold medals. The team won the LPSR cup.
  • The LVU men's team won the 1st place in the national championships in both 1989 and 1990. The team won the Latvian Cup in 1990.
  • In 1993/94, the men's team competed in the 2nd league in the republic, won 3rd place in the Riga championship.
  • In 1995/96, a women's and girls' basketball league - LSMBL - was established in Latvia, in which our team won 5th place. The LU team won the 2nd place in the Riga master competition, the 1st place in the LASS (Latvian University Sports Union) competition.
  • 1997 In the LSMBL competition, the LU women's team won the 3rd place.
  • Starting from 1996/97, men's teams had the opportunity to participate in the Student League competitions. LU basketball players won gold medals, they achieved the same success in 1997/98.
  • In May 1998, the SELL student sports games were held again, in which women's and men's basketball teams of LU participated, the women won 2nd place, and the men won 5th place.
  • 2000 – 2001 At the Latvian Universiade, LU men's basketball teams won 1st place twice in a row.
  • 2004/05 At the Latvian Universiade, the men's and women's basketball teams of LU won 1st places.
  • In 2005, SELL will play for 3rd place and champion title in the SEB Student Basketball League.
  • 2005/06 At the Latvian Universiade, the LU women's team won gold, and the men won silver. 1st place again in the SEB Student Basketball League.
  • 2006/07 At the Latvian Universiade, the LU men's team won 3rd place, and the women's team won 1st place. In the SELL student sports games, the LU women's team won silver.
  • 2007/2008. m.y. SELL will play for the 2nd place and the third championship title in the SEB Student Basketball League.
  • 2008/2009 LU women's and men's teams won silver medals at the University of Latvia, while SELL won 1st place in the games. In the SEB student basketball league, the LU men's team won 2nd place.
  • 2010 the fourth championship title in the SEB Student Basketball League. In the SELL student sports games, the LU women's team won 2nd place.
  • 2011 LBL 1. Division 8th place. LSBL women's team won 3rd place.
  • 2012 LBL 1st Division 4th place. The women's and men's teams of the University of Latvia won the 1st place in the Latvian University basketball tournament "April Madness". 
  • 2013 LBL 1st Division 5/6 place. 1st place for the men's team of the University of Latvia in the "April Madness" basketball tournament of Latvia, 2nd place for the women's team. LU men's team SELL will play for 1st place. 3rd place in the Riga women's basketball championship.
  • 2014 LBL 1st Division 8th place. 3rd place in the International Student Basketball League (ISBL). 1st place for the men's team of the University of Latvia in the "April Madness" basketball tournament of Latvia, 2nd place for the women's team.
  • 2015 LBL 1st Division 10th place. 1st place for the LU men's team of the Latvian University basketball tournament "Student Madness".
  • 2016 LBL 1st Division 11th place. 1st place for the LU men's team of the Latvian University basketball tournament "Student Madness". 2nd place in the International Student Basketball League (ISBL).
  • 2017 LBL 1st Division 10th place. 1st place for the LU men's team of the Latvian University basketball tournament "Student Madness". LU men's team SELL will play for 1st place.
  • In the summer of 2017, the Latvian student team, whose composition consists mainly of players and coaches of the LU basketball system, won bronze medals at the World Universiade.
  • In 2018, the men's team of the University of Latvia won 1st place at the 29th University of Latvia.


Basketball has always been one of the most popular sports among students at the University of Latvia.
