Operational Objectives
Public benefit activity - with the help of sports and forms of rehabilitation, to ensure strengthening of health, durability of working capacity and active creative longevity, to promote a healthy lifestyle at the University of Latvia and to represent the University of Latvia in competitions of various scales. The association was established with the aim of providing opportunities for every student to focus on academic studies, scientific research, as well as to engage in various types of social activities.
History
Sports and sports education at the University of Latvia is closely related to the formation and development of the first state university. In 1922, the Academic Sports Association of the University of Latvia was established as the seventh sports association in civil Latvia. Gradually, in the first quarter of the last century, sport at the University of Lugano gained general recognition and was recommended to all young people as an important leisure activity. In 1929, the association "University Sports" (US) was established. It is the oldest sports organization in Latvia, which has continuously continued its activities until this day. The association's sports teams have been crowned champions of national championships in almost every sport, and this rightly makes us consider LU one of the strongest sports organizations in Latvia.
Celebrating its 85th anniversary, the oldest sports organization presented the renewed sports logo of the University of Latvia. The new logo is historically the newest of the types of logos of the association "Universitātes sports" in a renewed version, where the most significant changes are connected with the change of letters - US (from the words "Universitātes sports") replaces LU ("University of Latvia"), thus symbolizing the name of the university. The lettering font has remained unchanged from LU in recent years in a custom that is most widely recognized in the aspect of the basketball team. Also, the central building of the University of Latvia, which is naturally located at 19 Rainias boulevard, was more carefully designed graphically, but the pre-war logo was reproduced only with a completely symbolic silhouette shape. The logo also includes the year of the association's foundation, 1929, and the central part includes the three words "University of Latvia sports", where the last of the words is in a variable form depending on the type of sport represented. The basic color of the logo is the same as the official color of the University of Latvia, which is blue, but white and dark blue versions of the logo are also acceptable. The shape of the logo has remained unchanged, with an open book at the top, symbolizing knowledge and education.
