The aim of the course is to provide knowledge and develop an understanding of the functioning of pelagic and benthic ecosystems, their role in ocean functioning and threats. Course tasks: • To promote understanding of the existence of organisms in difficult environmental conditions, in different ecosystems; • To improve students' skills in synthesis and evaluation of information on various ecosystem problems; • Pay special attention to the role of anthropogenic factor in ocean ecosystems; • To develop students' ability to independently search and analyze literature on peculiar and rarely-studied ecosystems and ocean problems. The study course is taught in Latvian and English.

Scholarship for undergraduates, graduates and students of professional programmes Application for scholarship must be submitted in the electronic system of the UL LUIS within 10 days from the beginning of registration week of the respectivesemester according to the calender of academic year. The documents confirming student's eligibility for the scholarship must be submitted to the secretary of the faculty. In accordance with bilateral agreements on co-operation in education and science concluded between Latvian government and a few countries Latvia offers scholarships to foreign students, researchers and teaching staff for studies, research and participation in summer schools in Latvian higher education institutions (HEIs) in the2019/2020 academic year. He is also an active lifelong member of the American Latvian Association and currently holds the post of a Senior Elder of the student corporation "Lettgallia"Foreign Presidency. In 2014, Roberts Blumbergs was awarded the Three Star Order. Parents of R.Blumbergs, Gunārs and Ināra, were both born in Latvia and arrived in the United States in 1950 as children of the World War II refugees. Gunārs and Ināra have established a scholarship for students of the Faculty of Law. Both R.Blumbergs’ grandfathers and one grandmother have graduated from the UL. LELCA (Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church Abroad) through its "Fund for Tomorrow"( Rītdienas fonds ) (1972) has supported the staff of UL Faculty of Theology from the beginning of its existence, and since the 2010/2011 academic year, it has started to grant scholarships to the students of theology. In the period from 2010 to 2014, LELCA "Fund for Tomorrow" granted scholarships with the aim to support the young scholars of UL Faculty of Theology, giving preference to those students who wished to devote their lives to service in the Latvian Lutheran parishes. The scholarship was dedicated to the memory of Dean Emeritus Uldis Cepure. Dean Uldis Cepure was born in 1935 in Riga. He finished primary school in Germany and secondary school in Nebraska, USA, where he studied theology and obtained a degree of Master of Divinity in 1960. U.Cepure began to serve as a pastor in the parishes of Americans, the descendants of German and Swedish immigrants, who elected him as Dean in South Dakota

The scholarship has been established in support of outstanding University of Latvia (UL) 1 st year doctoral students in 2017 by the patron “Mikrotīkls”. Its goal is to promote excellence at the UL and to advance growth and research opportunities of the most talented young doctoral students. The scholarship is intended for doctoral students in the field of exact and medical sciences from the UL Faculty of Biology, Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Optometry, Faculty of Computing, Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Chemistry. The religious organization is based in Germany. The aim of the course providing general understanding on the legal sources and the fields of application of the European labour law, including the knowledge on the importance of the European labour law in national legal systems and its practical application The course provides special attention to the legal sources of European labour law such as case-law of the European Court of Human Rights, European Social Rights Committee and Court of Justice of the EU and its application in practice. The course is conducted by using critical thinking method by developing and excelling the skills necessary for the identification of necessary legal sources, their search in data bases of the case-law (Eur-Lex, Curia, HUDOC), analysis and application in the practice.
