Computer security and vulnerabilities
Course
The course is intended to provide an overview in computer system and network security, covering common vulnerabilities and attack patterns from which the systems need to be protected. The tasks of this study course are to present the fundamentals of computer security, risk modeling, the process of security analysis and penetration testing, common web application and database system vulnerabilities, security of passwords and network authentication schemes, buffer overflow and privilege escalation attacks, and methods of post-attack forensic analysis. The course includes lectures combined with practical exercises that will require students to obtain hands-on skills for security testing of computers and networks. The language of instruction is Latvian.

Introduction to metadata
Course
The aim of this course is to give an overview on metadata, electronic resources and ways of identifying and connecting them with the help of various metadata standards. It further introduces resource depositories using metadata and gives broader perspective on the future of metadata applications. Theoretical part consists of metadata concept, different metadata schemes and standards, metadata production means, areas of metadata implementation, metadata projects, semantic web, onthologies. The practical part sees students designing a new metadata schema for a domain of their choice. Tasks of the course - to promote the acquisition of knowledge and skills about metadata and their use through lectures, practical work and seminars. The course is taught in Latvian.

The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the realm of the humanities, their development and role within the system of values of modern society, and the peculiarities of academic research in the field. Course
The aim of the course is to give knowledge about essential questions and consequences of economics. The course explains main principles of macroeconomics, as well as deals with macroeconomic aggregates and tools of economic adjustments, finally, the possible effects on economic situation and expected side effects, thus the course will develop and promote economic thinking of students. Course objectives: 1. to understand economic systems and it's structure, existing relationships between economic sectors; 2. to develop knowledge about economic processes, their regulation tools and possibilities; 3. to valuate the main principles of market economy, demand and supply sides in different markets and their role in the national economy. The language of instruction is Latvian.

Course
The aim of the course is to reinforce students’ knowledge of essential elements in the legal system, as well as the most essential aspects in labour law, inter alia, the right of an employee and the employer to patentable invention. The objectives of the course: 1) to improve theoretical knowledge of law, legal system, sources of law, persons applying law in the process of exercising rights; 2) to develop understanding of the role of law enforcement institutions in protecting human rights and ensuring functions of the State; 3) to master legal labour regulation, which defines the legal relationship of the employer and the employee and relationships closely linked to labour relations. The objective of the course is to provide history students for opportunities of interdisciplinary studies. The tasks of the course are learning about accomplishments, research problems and methods of other disciplines (mainly social sciences and humanities), introduce representatives of other disciplines to history science accomplishments, research problems and methods, communicate problems of history science to non-historian audience. It is recommended to participate in doctoral schools devoted to social sciences and humanities (in certain cases natural sciences school) in the University of Latvia or equivalent foreign academic institutions. Languages of instruction are Latvian and English.

Adaptation to endurance and resistance training
Course
The aim of the current course is to give an advanced knowledge to the students about the acute response and chronic adaptation to resistance and endurance training. The objectives of the course are: 1. to evaluate physiological and neuromuscular differences between aerobic and strength-type loads, as well as to acquire methodological principles for determining these differences; 2. to evaluate and explain the competing adaptation mechanisms, if the physical loads of resistance and endurance are performed simultaneously; 3. to provide knowledge whether a person can perform aerobic and strength loads at the same time, without compromising the adaptive changes in the human body promoted by each individual load. The language of instruction is Latvian and English.

The aim of the course is to provide a comprehensive knowledge of the industrial LEAN methods applied in contemporary organizations. The course also provides knowledge on the methods of industrial LEAN management, their application in different sectors of the economy as well as ensures an understanding of the possibilities of assessing the causes of efficiency problems, as well as provides knowledge and skills for co-operation with specialists from other sectors to address multidisciplinary industry issues. Tasks of the course: to explain to students the industrial LEAN methods and their application methods, to acquire skills to analyze the causes of efficiency problems and to offer creative solutions; as well as be able to identify efficiency problems in different sectors of the economy. Applied Anthropometry
Course
The aim of the course is to provide an opportunity for students to acquire knowledge of applied anthropometry and gain in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge in the use of anthropometric methods, which are necessary for evaluation of human physical status in different occupational groups. Course tasks: 1. to promote understanding about the methods of anthropometry and anthropometric measurements of individual body parts and tissues; 2. to provide theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the evaluation of anthropometric parameters, using the standards of evaluation criteria most frequently used in Europe and worldwide; 3. to conduce anthropometric parameters evaluation and prediction of health risks in different occupational groups. The languages of instruction are Latvian and English.
