Archaeological Heritage in Contemporary Europe
Course
The study course is devoted to different issues of archaeological heritage protection and management in contemporary Europe, paying attention to the development of idea of archaeological heritage and its protection, archaeological research methods and archaeological popularization issues. The aim of the course is to characterize the topicalities of archaeological heritage management and its importance in contemporary society and to improve students' research skills when dealing with heritage. The objectives of the course are following: 1. to analyze the formation of the understanding of archaeological heritage and its values, 2. to look at and evaluate archaeological research methods, 3. to describe the mutual relationships between archaeological heritage and society. The instruction language of the course is Latvian.

Human - computer interaction
Course
The aim of the course is to introduce psychological, social and technological aspects determining human interaction with computer. Course will provide a comprehensive overview of the principles of human perception and their relations with computational systems and interface usability. Students will also have skills necessary for conducting empirical research in testing computational systems and interfaces. Course tasks: 1) Explain the area of interface research within the context and overall development of interdisciplinary research; 2) Provide the understanding about factors determining interface perception (within the context of different areas of computing science); 3) Provide a core overview of theoretic frameworks and applicable methods.
The languages of instruction are Latvian and English.

Social research: design, implementation and use
Course
The aim of the course is to build students knowledge about the practical relevance of social research in addressing economic and social issues of contemporary society, promoting innovation and improving governance. The tasks of the course are: course explains design and process of social research from inception and proposal writing to project implementation, dissemination activities and use of results. The course analyses the link between research and practical needs of the society and focusses on valorisation of research results as means for improvement of economic and social processes. Examples and documents from EU Horizon 2020 research and innovation projects (FOODLINKS, SOLINSA, RETHINK, SALSA, SUFISA) are part of the training. Course is delivered in Latvian.

Field Course in the Regional Geology
Course
The aim of the course: to get acquainted with the complex structure and geological history of the Holy Cross Mountains (Góry Świętokrzyskie, Poland), to develop concepts of role of tectonic processes and rock composition on the formation of relief, to provide knowledge about limestone, conglomerate, sandstone and other mineral extraction and use. Tasks: - to broaden concepts and gain ability to study the geological settings of different regions from Latvia; - to practically master the methodology of geological field research in case of vertical and folded beds; - to strengthen knowledge in the documentation of outcrops and quarry walls, sampling and sample systematisation; - to master the basics of geological mapping. The study course is provided to students in Latvian and English.

The aim of the course: to provide students with opportunities to deepen their knowledge of the Earth's geological structure, the occurrence of geological processes and its impact on the anthroposphere. Course tasks: 1. to get acquainted with geological processes influenced by human factors; 2. to examine the most common geological risks, the possibilities of their assessment and mitigation; 3. to promote a deeper insight into engineering geology and hydrogeology; 4. to improve notions about the Earth's sources of mineral raw and other materials, the risks caused by their extraction and use; 5. to get acquainted with the most important problems in environmental and nature protection, which are related to the energy sector. The aim of the course is to provide students with theoretical and improve their skills in research methods of terrestrial and water ecosystems: 1) hydrological measurement methods, including the measurement and assessment of the hydrological and morphometric parameters of water bodies, as well as the data processing,; 2) methods of study taxonomic diversity in terrestrial ecosystems, including counts of plant and invertebrate communities, and data processing. Course Tasks: 1. to improve skills in field study methods; 2. to learn methods and data fixation for the characterization and research of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems; 3. to understand the basic principles for the ecosystem parameters data processing and interperetation. Course
The aim of the study course is to acquire knowledge and skills to use the principles of visual methodologies & tools in the implementation of various projects, tasks and goals. The task of the course is to acquire knowledge of real-world creative concepts to be able to relate these to concept design - to apply its tools and methodology in the development of existing or new products, services, projects, study courses, and creative concepts. The ability to use the design process in the implementation of various projects increases their usefulness, efficiency and cost. The acquired principles of design thinking & visual research methodologies can be used both in the student's study process, in their professional work, and in private life. The language of instruction is English.

Medical Latin
Course
The aim of the study course is to provide opportunities for students to acquire the necessary knowledge of Latin for later qualitative professional activity, as well as to understand medical terminology and professional literature. Tasks of the study course: to acquaint with declension of Latin nouns, verbs of four conjugations, focusing mainly on their use in recipes; to acquaint with the basic principles of the formation of medical terms and the strains of Latin and Greek nouns used in the medical language, to promote a general understanding of the processes of term formation; to promote the understanding of medical texts written in Latin, as well as the preparation of a simple diagnosis in Latin, while introducing the general principles of writing diagnoses. The study course is taught in Latvian.

The aim of the course is to activate and develop French business vocabulary, to effectively use business French terminology in real everyday work situations, by simulating specific authentic and semi-authentic business communication situations in the French business environment. The course also provides an insight into contemporary French business culture, the principles of business etiquette that must be followed during business negotiations and business correspondence.
