Research and innovation: development and management of language and culture projects
Course
The aim of the study course is to improve the doctoral students’ competence in project drafting and management: to develop understanding and develop skills for the use of a structured approach in project development, research and innovation; to provide in-depth knowledge of the specifics of interdisciplinary language and culture research projects, their development principles and methodology. Objectives: 1) to acquire up-to-date information on participation opportunities in national and international project competitions; 2) to study appropriate sources, theoretical literature and best practice examples in the development and implementation of research and culture projects; 3) to acquire practical skills in the development and management of projects in the field of language and culture. Language of instruction: Latvian and English

The Ancient East: Political Concepts in the Context of Culture
Course
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the political systems and main social models of the ancient East, looking at them in a cultural context. During the course, special attention is paid to how the ancient Eastern religions and mental settings influenced the formation of political systems and social structures. The tasks of the course are: to provide the necessary knowledge about the ancient Eastern political models and social structures, to study and understand the role of religion and culture in the development of ancient Eastern political and social models, to understand the differences between different ancient Eastern political and social models, to learn to work with ancient Eastern political texts. The goal of the study course is to ensure the students of the Faculty of Law master the basics of forensic psychiatry. This knowledge is necessary for every lawyer regardless of the area of law enforcement in which he or she will be working. For the purposes of achieving the goal of the forensic psychiatry study course, the following tasks have been set in the study programme: - to ensure the study process during which the basics of forensic psychiatry and its sub-fields are taught; - to facilitate the mastering of knowledge, skills and competences crucial for the labour market in the sphere of forensic psychiatry; - to develop critical thinking skills by resolving matters related to forensic psychiatry during practical work.

The aim of the course is to promote understanding of students on the formation and regularities of distribution of mineral deposits, methodology of prospecting and exploration work, as well as the resource calculations. The tasks of the course are: 1. to characterize the distribution of mineral deposits in the context of Earths history and plate tectonics; 2. to describe the stages of mineral prospecting and exploration works with the aim of finding and exploring the deposits; 3. to master the methodology of mineral resource calculation; 4. to describe modern requirements for the evaluation of deposits for their practical use; 5. to describe novelties in mineral research in the world. 6. to characterize the aspects of economy in geology of mineral deposits. The course is taught in Latvian and English.

Environmental chemistry and toxicology
Course
The study course gives overview about the origin and effects of substances of both natural and anthropogenic origin on living organisms. The mechanisms of absorption, distribution and biotransformation of toxic substances that elicit a toxic response are widely discussed. The aim of the course is to provide students with knowledge about biochemical processes and changes in living organisms caused by toxic substances. Discussions and group literature studies on the effects of the most common and dangerous toxic substances take place in the seminars. The tasks of the course are to explain the general structure and toxic activity relationships, to perform risk assessment and to analyze the possibilities of reducing and preventing the consequences of exposure to toxic substances. The language of instruction is Latvian.

Main goal of the course is to give overview of different NoSQL technologies and databases, as well as usage of different types of NoSQL databases in single solution (polyglot persistence). Data exchange and system integration is important nowadays; different technologies and tools for data exchange and system integration is analyzed during the course. Course tasks are: * tell about different non-relational types of data management systems, their advantages and disadvantages; * tell about advantages and disadvantages of usage of different data management systems; * give experience to students with usage of different data management system usage in their projects. Secure System Modelling
Course
Course goal: This course will provide students an overview of the principles for secure system design. Course tasks: The participants will learn what security risk management is, and how to ensure confidentiality, integrity and availability of protected assets. The course will also analyse how to engineer and model security requirements, what are the major security controls. The course includes the overview of the principles for the model driven security. A number of lectures will be given to understand what are the principles of security development processes and what the security patterns are. During the practical seminars, there will be a number of exercises, concentrating on the deepening the theoretical knowledge given during the lectures. The language of instruction is English.

Interior Designing I
Course
The aim of the study course is to provide students the opportunity to develop an understanding of interior design, based on knowledge of the basic principles of composition, as well as to gain knowledge of basic principles of interior designing, finishing materials, furniture, plumbing and technical applications, electrical plans and use of appropriate technical designations. Tasks: 1) to get acquainted with a project for residental spaces by any interior designer, to analyze it and present a research; 2) to get acquainted with the structure of the interior design project and the consecutive elaborating of plans, according to the course of the process; 3) according to the acquired knowledge in the course, to develop and present an interior design project. The languages of instruction are Latvian and English.

Introduction to metadata
Course
The aim of this course is to give an overview on metadata, electronic resources and ways of identifying and connecting them with the help of various metadata standards. It further introduces resource depositories using metadata and gives broader perspective on the future of metadata applications. Theoretical part consists of metadata concept, different metadata schemes and standards, metadata production means, areas of metadata implementation, metadata projects, semantic web, onthologies. The practical part sees students designing a new metadata schema for a domain of their choice. Tasks of the course - to promote the acquisition of knowledge and skills about metadata and their use through lectures, practical work and seminars. The course is taught in Latvian.
