The course aims at acquainting the students with the study process at the University at the transition stage from secondary to higher education. The students will be acquainted with the basic requirements of studying at the University, instructed about planning their time and studies and their communication with the teaching staff and other students. The students will be taught the rules of academic writing and illuminated on the notion of plagiarism. The students will be taught how to use libraries in search for information, acquainted with resources offered by library of the University of Latvia. The students will be familiarised with possibilities of using ITs in their studies, processing and visualising the obtained material thus enabling them to participate in studies and research work of the Faculty. English for Law
Course
The aim of the course is to develop the skills of law students to work with the legal literature in English. During the course students study different types of legal texts (theoretical books and textbooks, international agreements, laws, court rulings, Internet materials) and work with these texts while seeking for information and solving problems specific to the law sector. The course focuses on students' receptive English language skills; productive activity is intended as a method of consolidating the acquired knowledge.

Consumer Protection Laws

The aim of this course is to introduce students with protection of consumer rights, its necessity, concept, and general principles; legal regulation of consumer rights in Latvia in conjunction with the European Union law; specifics of regulation of different types of contracts from the point of view of the consumer law; analyse recent cases in the practice of the Court of Justice of the European Union and Latvian courts; and to introduce with protection issues for breaches of consumer rights and methods for solving disputes concerning these breaches.

The aim of the course is to form basic skills in psychological assessment and psychological counseling according to the chosen specialization. Students work as psychologist in institutions under supervisor. Students regularly work with at least two clients per week during their internship and participate in supervisions 4 hours a week together with a supervisor of the practice.

Tax Law
Course
The aim of this course is to teach students about the sources of tax law and laws about fees, the relevant concepts, basic principles, theories, subjects and objects, tax relations, and relevant legal regulations. A key element in the course is that students will learn about various aspects of budget laws and laws about budgeting procedures, promoting the acquisition of the necessary skills, knowledge and competences that are essential in today's labor market by developing critical thinking skills.

The language course is designed for foreign students, who study Latvian at UL and have completed “Elementary Latvian Course” (levels A1; A2). Objectives of the course include improving speaking and writing skills, extending knowledge of grammar issues, developing communicative, linguistic, pragmatic and sociocultural competence. The course envisages giving an insight of usage of Latvian in the social context, fiction and journalism. The course has been developed in accordance with the set European Framework of Language (level B1). Results According to B1 level specification, students are able to give and understand information regarding subjects and situations of daily routine and studies. Students are able to grasp information from mass media and comprehend a plot of fiction works. Students are skilled enough to prevent language mistakes leading to miscomprehensions, and are aware of the communication compensating strategies.

International affairs bring a multinational spirit to the activities of the Students' Council of the University of Latvia through the UL International Students' Collegium initative, as well as by assisting foreign students and involving them in different events and projects. Also, international affairs provide opportunities for local students to go on exchange visits and trips to universities in other countries encouraging them to afterward apply and integrate the learned practices into the processes of the University of Latvia. The present study course is designed for beginners. In the course the students get acquainted with the basic knowledge of Latvian. The course is based on acquisition of such language skills as listening, reading, dialogue and monologue. The main emphasis of the course is mastering phonetic and grammar structures incorporated in communicative functions. The course has been developed is accordance with the set European Framework of Reference for Language (level A1; A2). Results After completing of the course (level A1) the students should understand simple phrases and sentences. They should be able to ask questions and to tell about themselves, their home, etc. After completing of the course (level A2) the students should be able to understand simple texts and communicate in common social situations.
