To promote a culture of altruism among the scholarship recipients, each semester the scholars are invited to volunteer. Each University of Latvia Foundation scholarship holder in the 2022/2023 academic year must invest at least 20 hours into volunteer work per semester. Volunteer work should preferably be performed for the benefit of the University of Latvia Foundation, the University of Latvia or the state and society of Latvia. The University of Latvia Foundation scholarship recipients are invited to fill in an online questionnaire about their favourite volunteer work opportunities at the University of Latvia Foundation. If necessary, a representative of the University of Latvia Foundation will contact each interested person individually. Outpatient ophthalmology II
Course
The course is developed for the second study year residents of ophthalmology to prepare them for work with outpatient patients. Outpatient ophthalmology is acquired in parts from the 1st till the3rd study year. Tasks of the course: -to be able to draw up a treatment plan; -to acquire conservative therapy; -to acquire medication groups, medication indications, contraindications, side effects, medication compatibility in groups, taking into account systemic diseases; -to acquire the application of contact lenses, the laser therapy, its types, indications, contraindications, side effects, and possibilities of surgical treatment. The course is taught in Latvian.

Psychological Aspects of Peer -Mentoring
Course
The aim of this course is to improve mentors’ knowledge (development) of the psychological aspects of peer-mentoring for first-year students, to foster mentors’ awareness of the support and guidance process, to develop the course participants’ active listening and guidance skills, with the aim to reduce the first-year students` dropout risks. Workshops will help mentors to understand the nature of peer-mentoring. It helps mentors to gain awareness of their own resources for providing mentees with guidance, to understand the importance of time management, efficacy of different styles of communication, as well as to develop peer-mentoring process management skills from the initial contact to the final sessions and feedback provision. The course is taught in Latvian.

Taking part in Summer School for Ph.D. students and Early Stage Researchers
Course
It is possible for Ph. D. students to participate in the summer school for doctoral students and early stage researchers (ESR) both at universities located in Latvia and abroad. Participation in the summer school contributes to the doctoral student's specialization and elaboration of their doctoral thesis. The goal of the course is to facilitate the acquisition of new specialized knowledge and the integration of the Ph. D. student into the academic environment. Objectives of the course: 1) Acquiring in-depth knowledge of the chosen field of social science; 2) Acquiring in-depth knowledge in a specialization; 3) Promotion of the doctoral student's integration into the academic environment and the development of further contacts. Language of instruction: Latvian and / or English.
