and clarification provided by the director of the doctoral study program in the Natural sciences, professor Didzis Elferts, in which questions were posed by the students regarding the criteria of the credit points, the compulsory and elective courses. Dr. Inga Pudža, a former Ph.D. student, was the invited speaker at the last session of the seminar, where she presented her Ph.D. journey, including all of the hardships and wonderful moments, and presented extremely important advice and recommendations for the strategies of successful Ph.D. defense. The personal experiences and challenges that Dr. Inga shared were quite insightful, and the audience was very engaged and eager to learn about the challenges and successes that may be encountered on this journey. Following the formal session, Ph.D. participants gathered at the bowling alley for a social event where they got to know one another better and exchanged various conversations while also having some fun.

The course is intended for students of law and social sciences. It aims at developing the students’ skills of dealing with German legal language in legal discourse, including media texts on legal topics (in newspapers, on the internet, on the radio and on TV). Practical exercises cover constitutional, European and civil law as well as their representation in the media. These exercises develop the students’ receptive skills (reading and listening) as well as their productive abilities (writing and presenting legal texts). The course is devoted to the specific linguistic characteristics of legal language (technical terms and syntactical features such as sentences in the subjunctive), and it discusses different types of legal and journalistic texts (contracts, laws, verdicts, newspaper articles, radio and TV reports).

The aim of the course is to develop the students’ capability to read and listen to German historical texts. The course focuses on the first half of the 20th century dealing both with texts of the Weimar Republic and the Nazi takeover of power. The classes are devoted to political, legal, journalistic and academic sources as well as to texts of everyday life (such as advertising texts). The students will learn important historical terms and common abbreviations and will also be able to improve their knowledge of German sentence structures.

Curators are first-year student assistants from the ranks of staff who aim to facilitate the social and academic adaptation of students. Their main tasks are to support freshmen in their studies, to promote social inclusion and to solve the problems that students face on a daily basis. Curators are happy to show the faculty premises, informally introduce the most important rules of the study process and describe the lecturers, as well as help to cope with the tests and tell about the possibilities to express themselves creatively outside the study environment.
