Training of future specialists The School of Young Chemists established at the University of Latvia Faculty of Chemistry organizes classes for pupils. The aim is to kindle an interest in acquiring knowledge and skills in chemistry, providing insights and knowledge in addition to what the pupils have learned at school. The groups under the auspices of the School of Young Chemists operate in more than 10 Latvian cities, led by our lecturers and the most talented students. To mark a successful participation in the School of Young Chemists, the secondary school graduates obtain a certificate issued by the University of Latvia, granting them additional points when entering the bachelor's degree programme “Chemistry” at the University of Latvia Faculty of Chemistry.

The Internal Communication affairs is responsible for internal communication between LU SP members, Chairpersons and Deputy Chairpersons of Faculty Students' Councils (FSCs) of all 13 faculties and the LU SP Board, as well as activists. Creation of unifying and educational events where everyone can get involved, which are game nights, discussion cycles, and events based on competence paths in finance, academic issues, etc. is just some of the work handled by Internal Communication affairs. If you want to know more about the activities of the LU SP, involvement in various fields, feel free to contact Domeniks, Head of Internal Communication affairs ( domeniks.ulmanis@lusp.lv ).
International Conference “Hydrogen technology opportunities for sustainable development of cities”
03.09.2021 19:16 Content
On 20th March, 2013 Riga Energy Agency in cooperation with HyER (the European Association for Hydrogen and fuel cells and Electro-mobility in European Regions) and Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia for the first time in Latvia organized an international conference about innovative hydrogen technologies “Hydrogen technology opportunities for sustainable development of cities”. The conference target audience was Latvian scientists, students, representatives of public administration institutions, banks, businesses, municipalities leaders, mass media and citizens interested in the conference topic. So far in Latvia only scientists have been active in researching hydrogen technologies, especially Institute of Solid State Physics and Physical Energy Institute, there has been an interest in students' environment, scientists have been setting the interesting scientific conferences and seminars, but we have so far missed an open conversation with the public about
BETWEEN SURVEILLANCE AND NON-INTERFERENCE OF STATE AUTHORITIES: THE PRACTICES OF SAME-SEX SEXUAL SUBCULTURES IN SOVIET LATVIA, 1954–1991

. The objectives of the research project are researching the interaction between the practices of state authorities in the monitoring of same-sex loving men and the subcultures juxtaposing the data obtained from court judgments and a diary and interviews; examining the practices of female same-sex subcultures; analysing the knowledge and perceptions of non-homosexual contemporaries on the practices of state authorities and same-sex sexual subcultures. We expect: to (re)construct the experiences of the insiders, to create the first collection of oral history sources in Latvia with a focus on homosexual experiences, to contribute to a more balanced and inclusive Latvian history and to the global narrative of history of Soviet same-sex subcultures adding the Latvian case to the debates. Project team: Dr. hist. Ineta Lipša, Dr. hist. Kaspars Zellis, Dr. phil. Kārlis Vērdiņš, Doctoral student Elizabete Vizgunova-Vikmane and Master’s student Signe Šēnfelde.

EFFECTS OF CONTINUOUS LASER RADIATION ON SKIN’S AUTOFLUORESCENCE LIFETIME.
29.03.2020 17:16 Content
Antra Dzērve (IAPS UL MA student) Spectroscopy techniques (excitation of the skin's autofluorescence and observation of emission spectra) make it impossible to distinguish the components forming the spectrum. By approximating the data obtained by time-resolved spectroscopy with three components and processing with the TRES and TRANES methods, it is possible to distinguish the spectral components and observe the effect of continuous laser radiation on the life of the components. Autofluorescence lifetimes may vary - increase or decrease - depending on the wavelength used and the range selected for irradiation. Using TRANES processing method, after photobleaching, a shift in the emission peak was observed, indicating a change in fluorophore distribution during photobleaching process. This method allows a better understanding of the effect of continuous laser radiation method on fluorophores.
