The aim of the study course is to give the students basic knowledge of general principles of disease processes primarily related to cell damage, adaptation, reparation, inflammation and the development of tumours.
The objectives of the study course are the following:
  • to describe the basic pathological processes;
  • to give knowledge how independently to be able to account for the formation mechanisms of the most important diseases and their processes;
  • theoretically to recognize the signs of the most common diseases;
  • to provide the view of disease diagnosis and treatment options.
Course languages: Latvian and English.

The aim of the course is to train students for independent work in reading professional literature, presenting the acquired information and expressing and learning professional opinions. In order to achieve the aim of the course, there the following enabling objectives: 1. to learn the criteria for choosing professional literature, to read the recommended and self-selected materials, summarize and present them and discuss the materials with their colleagues 2. to acquire the fundamental medical terminology in English as well as revise the practical use of selective grammar issues 3. to improve the skills for using various online resources for obtaining information and and checking its validity. 4. to facilitate group communication and socially-oriented work as one of learning strategies (through discussions, debates). Language of instruction is English.

Historical and Cultural Legacy of the Hanseatic League
Course
Riga and other older cities and towns of Latvia are used to be proud about their former belonging to the Hanseatic League. But at the same time the Hanseatic League is viewed as the part of German history, and these are rather emotions than precise knowledge that affects the attitude towards the Hanseatic past. And due to that the understanding and evaluation of the connections between the Hanseatic League and Livonia, like the Hanseatic influence on the history of Livonia and formation of Livonian towns, is very important for the historians. The course introduces students with the change of research paradigms in the Hanseatic history that had occurred in Germany, Scandinavia, Estonia and Latvia during the last decades. Attention is paid also to the attitudes towards the Hanseatic cultural heritage and historical legacy characteristic for these countries in the past and present.

Course
"Computer networks I and insight into industry" course is based on Cisco “CCNA Routing and Switching: Introduction to Networks” course. It is the first of the four courses leading to the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification. The goal of the course is to introduce students to the networking field. The tasks of the course are to teach network terminology, classification and protocols, local-area networks (LANs), Open System Interconnection (OSI) models, cabling, cabling tools, routers and routing, Ethernet, Internet Protocol (IP) addressing, and network standards. In addition to the CCNA topics the course covers basic terminology and principles of operation of wireless networks, IT security and Internet of Things. The course includes a theoretical and practical exam. The language of instruction is Latvian.

Society and Psychedelic Substances

The overall goal of the course is to introduce students to the contemporary critical evidence-based discussions that surround psychedelic substance engagement. Course task is to address harm reduction policy perspectives in the context of social problems, such as depression and addiction. Another task of the course is to explore the major categories of psychedelic substances through sociological analysis. Critical thinking about psychedelic cultures and the current and potential roles that psychedelics play in society are included, placing an emphasis on cross-culture perspectives. Key sociological theories are used to explain and analyse various forms of psychedelic substance engagement. The understanding of psychedelic substance role through interdisciplinary social analysis is related to sociology, anthropology, history, social policy and philosophy. Palaeontology and stratigraphy

The aim of the course is to provide students with opportunities to acquire knowledge about the diversity, evolution, ecology, geological significance of extinct organisms and basics of stratigraphy. Tasks of the course: 1) to introduce to the principles of plant and animal systematics; 2) to acquaint with biological diversity in ancient biospheres, the evolution of life, the interaction of living organisms and the environment; 3) to promote the formation of notions on the methods of determining the age of rocks, minerals and fossils and the periodization of geological history; 4) to promote the deepening of knowledge about the stratigraphic significance of fossils and the rock-former role; 5) to promote the strengthening of fossil detection skills; 6) to acquaint with the research methods of palaeontology and stratigraphy and to promote their practical acquisition. Teaching Practice II
Course
Teaching practice II is a part of the pedagogical practice of the study programme “Teacher”, the aim of which is to develop teacher research competence by conducting pedagogical research. During the practice, the student - develops a research plan for carrying out research tasks in an educational institution; - creates the instructional materials necessary for the implementation of pedagogical research; - independently plans, organizes and leads lessons related to the teacher's research activities; - develops data collection tools,collects, and analyses the collected data; - evaluates the results of his / her work and plans his / her professional development. In order to ensure effective research work, the course of teaching practice is analysed in seminars together with the practice supervisor of the University of Latvia. The language of instruction is Latvian.

Classical Anthropological Theories

The aim of the course is to serve as an introduction into anthropological philosophy and theory by looking at the beginning of the discipline. Emphasis is placed on the interdisciplinary roots of anthropology, the development of professional standards as a real-time debate and the answer to specific questions in society at that time and many still relevant ones. The development of concepts such as culture and other concepts is considered. Course tasks: - to get acquainted with classical theories of anthropology, anthropologically analyzing the formation of ideas and related everyday practices in different societies. - to look at a number of influential works of social anthropologists (including theoretical debates among these researchers) on various issues in a diverse cultural and social context. - to supplement students' knowledge of social anthropology acquired in other courses. The course is implemented in Latvian and English.
