Elizabete Akmentiņa (1920–2014) was born in Kārsava district on 27 June 1920. In the aftermath of the World War II, 1949, herself and her family were deported to the Amur region of Siberia. After returning in 1957, she worked at a collective farm all her life. Support On 11 September 2007, she transferred her real estate "Apiņu mājas"in Malnava, Kārsava municipality, to the University of Latvia, and also gifted to the university her certificates of compensation and privatization. Her donation in the 2009/2010academic year enabled seven UL students to receive the scholarship "Ceļamaize 2009" ("Bread for the journey 2009"). We greatly appreciate the generous support to education!

Project "Modernization of Computer Science Study Programs" As a result of the project, the University of Latvia will offer European-level computer science study programs, which is a step towards the general goal of the University of Latvia to offer quality, excellence-oriented education. Engure municipality has one of the longest sea borders of all the municipalities in Latvia – its length is 56 km. Almost 8000 people have settled here and send their children to educational institutions in Milzkalne, Smārde, Lapmežciems and Engure. According to census, the number of inhabitants in Engure region within the last ten years has increased. The aim of the course is to strengthen students' understanding of grammatical structures, develop the skill to analyse and critically evaluate them, facilitate their use in spoken and written communication in academic, professional and everyday discourse. The objectives of the course are: 1) to extend students' knowledge about the sentence structure in the English language, types of clauses and their linking, the subjunctive mood, verb non-finite forms and their contextual use in different communicative situations at B2/ C1 level; 2) improve the skills to recognise, analyse and use grammatical structures in discourse; 3) distinguish the use of grammatical forms in British and American varieties. The course is one of the modules of a program “Teaching and learning for competence development” that is grounded in research-based ideas and practice. The course is intended for pedagogues representing different subject areas in comprehensive education. Upon completion of this course, participants will broaden their understanding on what kind of student learning process the result is student’s competence and how to realize such a learning process in specific classroom setting. During course lessons, participants will have a chance to analyse different teaching situations, lesson plan examples, do methodical assignments, engage in professional experience exchange on teaching and assessment possibilities that are aimed at learning for competence development. In between lessons there will be an individual assignment.

German for Academic Studies

The course is intended for students of all subjects with German language level B1/B2. Its goal is to expand their reading and listening comprehension as well as their writing and speaking skills. Most of the materials and exercises are based on students’ academic needs, complemented, however, by sources from politics, history and social life. Two representative languages will be analyzed and taught in detail with regard to their specific structure. In addition, a subject adequate communication will be practised by writing summaries, abstracts (for research papers), by talking on the phone with experts and by giving presentations. The participants are expected to contribute actively in class. The course concludes with an exam that includes questions for a listening text.

Psychological Aspects of Peer -Mentoring

The aim of this course is to improve mentors’ knowledge (development) of the psychological aspects of peer-mentoring for first-year students, to foster mentors’ awareness of the support and guidance process, to develop the course participants’ active listening and guidance skills, with the aim to reduce the first-year students` dropout risks. Workshops will help mentors to understand the nature of peer-mentoring. It helps mentors to gain awareness of their own resources for providing mentees with guidance, to understand the importance of time management, efficacy of different styles of communication, as well as to develop peer-mentoring process management skills from the initial contact to the final sessions and feedback provision. The course is taught in Latvian.
