The aim of the study course is to facilitate doctoral students’ research and innovation competence in educational sciences by using technological solutions for enhancing education quality at school and/or higher education institution. Within the study course, the doctoral student designs a draft product that is relevant for the digital study environment and is intended for dealing with the challenges initiated by educational practice.
The course comprises two research and empirical seminars (16 hours each), during which doctoral students work on designing the product concept for dealing with challenges topical in educational practice.

In the 2012 Moot Court Competition , the winners were University of Latvia Faculty of Law students Andrejs Stupins, Viesturs Lācis, and Elīna Semeņuka . The award for the Best Written Submission was given to Līva Kalniņa, Baiba Skara, and Daina Golubovska , all representing the University of Latvia. The Patron of the Moot Court was Agris Bitāns , a lecturer at the University of Latvia Faculty of Law and the managing partner at the law firm ZAB "Eversheds Bitāns" . The moot problem was created by Lauris Buls , a doctoral student at the University of Latvia Faculty of Law. Information about the students' achievements was published in the journal Jurista Vārds on July 10, 2012 , Issue No. 28 (727) . From 2009 to 2016 , the civil law moot court competition was organized by ELSA Latvia .
The University of Latvia Faculty of Chemistry was founded in 1919. Later, in 1958 it was incorporated into the Riga Polytechnic Institute (today – Riga Technical University). However, soon after, in 1964, the Faculty of Chemistry was re-established at the University of Latvia. The first dean of the newly established faculty was Gunārs Slaidiņš, who had only recently (1958) completed his studies at the Faculty of Chemistry of the State University of Latvia, and in 1961 – postgraduate studies in electrochemistry in Moscow. Initially, the Faculty of Chemistry had 2 chairs: the Chair of Organic and Physical Chemistry, headed by Assistant Professor Valdemārs Grīnšteins, and the Chair of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry headed by Assistant Professor Edgars Jansons. Already in the first year, the new faculty offered students both day and evening studies. The scholarship was established in 1999 by Guntis Bērziņš, a patron, professional engineer and public figure, in honour of his grandfather – the first elected rector of the University of Latvia (UL), Prof.Ernests Felsbergs (1922–1923). The aim of the scholarship is to support capable, diligent and socially active students of humanities at the University of Latvia. The aim of the course is to provide to the students quality learning of theoretical knowledge and research skills in sentence execution law. The course provides knowledge on the content of sentence (criminal punishment) execution law, policy on sentence execution and its development, its role in prevention of crimes; aim of sentence execution; sentence execution institutions (including prisons) and their tasks; development of most important penitentiary ideas; internationally recognised recommendations in work with convicts by emphasising requirements set out in Recommendation Rec(2006)2 of the Committee of Ministers to member states on the European Prison Rules. The course turns attention to the meaning and functions of the State Probation Service, understanding of various forms of supervision in society; as well as experience of foreign legislators and practice in the Republic of Latvia; basic knowledge of terminology in sentence execution law in English.
In order to achieve the aim
During the course students are introduced to the procedure of studies in the University of Latvia and the study process in the chosen bachelor programme viewing the requirements and opportunities of the study environment, basics of the academic writing, specifics of the independent research work, tradition of mass communication research works, quantitative and qualitative methods, phases of research, logics, planning, processing and presenting data.
Between June 16-19, Associate Professor Jānis Alnis and two bachelor's students from the University of Latvia – Kalvis Kalniņš and Matīss Čakšs travelled to Germany to visit the Center for Soft Nanoscience at the University of Münster and the research group of Professor Helmut Zacharias. The purpose of the visit was to get acquainted with the femtosecond laser system capable of generating terawatt power pulses, as well as to explore potential research directions in which this system is used. During the visit, Professor Helmut Zacharias and PhD student Victor Kärcher introduced the laser system setup and its main components. Both the oscillator and the two amplifiers were examined. After the demonstration, the laser system was disassembled and packed for shipment to Latvia for further use
The students of the Faculty of Humanities can apply for Erasmus+ internship. A student, finding the internship in one of the enterprises abroad (Erasmus zone countries only), can get a scholarship from the University of Latvia. The application procedure: A student should find a place for his/her internship. However, before that a student should discuss the internship with the director of the programme (how the internship can be included into the programme). A student should get an acceptance letter that confirms the readiness of an enterprise to accept the student for the period of the internship.
