The Transformations of Arabic Literature from the Arab Renaissance to the 21st Century

The aim of the course is to provide students with an opportunity to enrich their knowledge of the transformations and hybridization under the influence of the Western culture, from the Arab Renaissance to the 21st century. The objectives of the course are: 1) to explore the gradual hybridization of Arab cultural environment; 2) to explore the preconditions, development and consequences of the Arab Renaissance; 3) to study in-depth the development of Arabic prose in the 20th-21st centuries; 4) to study in-depth the development of Arabic poetry in the 20th-21st centuries; 5) to deepen the knowledge about the research methods of Arab culture and literature and the main theories of research development as well as about the current terminology of the field. Persian (Farsi)Colloquial Language and Communication Culture II
Course
The aim of the course is to enhance student’s speaking skills and the acquisition of the Colloquial Persian (Farsi) language speaking about everyday topics, getting acquainted and courtesy rituals and decent conversation topics, to introduce Persian culture and literature. The objectives of the course: 1) continue the acquisition of the phonetics, grammar and lexical basis of the Colloquial Persian language. 2) facilitate the acquisition of vocabulary and phrases necessary for everyday communication in the Colloquial Persian (Farsi) language (on the covered topics). 3) continue acquisition of polite communication rules in the Iranian culture; 4) to introduce the biography and works of the most popular Persian poets; 5) to introduce the humour in the Persian culture. Language of instruction is English, Persian (Farsi), and Latvian.

Annotation of the study course: The aim of the course is to provide students with an insight as well as the necessary knowledge, skills and competences in the development and practical application of public relations strategy and tactics. The aim of the course is to provide knowledge of the basic concepts and theories of semiotics and visual rhetoric, developing students' skills of independent semiotic and rhetoric analysis, as well as fostering critical thinking and information literacy in a semiotically saturated information environment. The objectives of the course are: 1. to define and contextualise the basic concepts of semiotics, tracing their origins in the philosophical tradition. 2. to introduce the fields of semiotics and related disciplines, providing insight into both cultural and biosemiotics. 3. to examine and practice the methods of visual rhetoric in cultural analysis. 4. to promote independent research skills in semiotics and visual rhetoric through practical exercises and assignments. 5. to develop competence in critical analysis, interpretation and communication of information. The course is being taught in Latvian.

The aim of the course is to discuss machine learning algorithms that allow to predict future outcomes based on available past training data. Machine learning is a cornerstone in Data Science, Big Data Analytics, Robotics, Natural Language Processing and other areas of Artificial Intelligence. As computers and GPUs become more powerful, it is deep neural networks that have gradually replaced the legacy Machine Learning methods. The task of the course is to acquaint students with the concepts and algorithms of supervised, unsupervised, and self-supervised machine learning from primitive classification to Deep Learning using artificial neural networks. The course does not require prior knowledge of machine learning, but requires general programming skills for homework The language of instruction is Latvian.

Problems of History of Ukraine 19-20th Century
Course
The objective of the course is to provide students with an opportunity to explore the main problems of the political, military and social history of the land of Ukraine and its population in the 19th and 20th centuries. The tasks of the course are 1) to characterize the background and situation of the Ukrainian lands as part of the Russian and Austro-Hungarian Empire until the First World War, 2) to analyze the process and specific features of the national awakening of the Ukrainian nation, 3) to observe the different forms of Ukrainian statehood and their development in the 20th century, including history problems of contemporary independent Ukraine, 4) to characterize the situation of the Ukrainian people within the USSR and the Republic of Poland. The course is based on the studies of historical sources and research literature. The language of instruction is Latvian.

The aim of the course is to provide an opportunity for students to acquire knowledge of the concepts and theories of social work that form the basis of social work with the community. Course tasks: 1. To provide insight into theories and methods of social work community. 2. To update the needs of the population and groups of the community by analyzing the political, socio-economic and cultural factors in the community. 3. To set out the policy for the provision of services and programs according to the needs of the population of the community. 4. To acquaint with the legal regulation of the NGO sector, associations and organizations, social entrepreneurship in Latvia. 5. To promote the formation of awareness about the participation of the community society in the awareness, use and development of community resources, the course including seminars, discussions and practical tasks. The course is lead in Latvian.
