Soils and Wildlife of Latvia
Course
The aim of the study course is to provide students with opportunities to acquire knowledge, skills and competences on the diversity of soils and biota, its geography and factors and processes involved, and its ecological and social importance. The objectives of the course are (1) to acquire knowledge and to practically recognise the types of soil formation and the factors affecting it and the processes of soil formation in Latvia; (2) to acquire knowledge and to recognise practically the types of Latvian ecosystems, regional differences in flora, vegetation and fauna and factors governing these differences; (3) to understand the principles of Latvian biogeographical and soil regionalisation, and to learn to apply this knowledge in the context of sustainable management of natural resources; (4) to understand the role of soil and biota in the stability of the natural and social environment, to address conservation issues. The course language is Latvian.

Course aim: Understand the theoretical bases of number sets, measurements and geometrical objects and their learning in a math course in a competence-based education. Understanding of mathematical relationships, their justification and their interrelation, application and problem-solving in grade 1-3 math. Tasks: 1. Present students with math-related learning goals in each class and every topic. 2. Acquire knowledge of the sets, sizes of numbers and geometrical shapes. 3. Learn the skills to plan, implement math teaching/learning in a competence-based approach. 4. Learn the main themes of the grade 1-3 math subjects and their interrelation. 5. Learn the skills to divide mathematics into tasks, analyse and base your ideas and evaluate their realisation. The language of instruction is Latvian.

The aim of the course is to give students the opportunity to learn the theoretical bases of the math basic content, the legal relationships that can be integrated into the first stage of the primary school in a competence-based education, including in this case the development of mathematical thinking, real-life situations and mathematical problems of the modern pupil's personal importance. Course task: 1) to focus individual elements of the special methods of elementary mathematics 2) to develop task-solving skills, including the development of proven skills. 3) to improve understanding of relationship and processes in nature, society and mathematics. 4) to promoting the development of thinking by issuing mathematical judgments and learning the experience of problem solving; 5) to raise awareness of the relationship between mathematics and other subjects The language of instruction is Latvian.

Theoretical Archaeology
Course
The aim of study course is to provide students with the opportunity to get acquainted with the theoretical archaeology as particular branch of archaeology. The tasks of the course are following: to characterise the main concepts and methods of theoretical archaeology, connections of archaeology with other sciences and meaning of archaeology in contemporary society as well as to pay attention to the significance of archaeological theory in different directions of archaeology. The course deals with the formation of theoretical archeology and its most important approaches in the 20th-21st centuries, discussing the development of archaeological thought in different periods and regions. Alongside the characterisation of directions of archaeological research, the course also focuses on research themes and current issues in archeology, including social, environmental and cognitive archeology, archaeological heritage management, and public archeology. Course
The course aim is to develop teacher’s competence related to economic, political, social, historical and cultural processes in Russia, highlighting the link between these processes and the content and form of Russian-speaking communication. Objectives of the course: 1. to establish the basic systematic knowledge about Russia, which includes the pattern of Russia’s worldview, verbal and non-verbal norms of behaviour guided in the public and cultural life; 2. to introduce students to the cultural and historical context, with a focus on the complementary meanings, the connotations of words and expressions in the communication process and in literary expression; 3. learning the skills of linguistic analysis related to the ability to recognize features of the national culture, the text reading skills required to receive the language culturology and country science information. The language of instruction is Russian.

Course
The aim of the course is to gain an in-depth understanding of discourse and its role in constructing the realities of society. During the course, students acquire practical skills in the application of discourse analysis, analyzing the use of language in the context of social, political, economic and cultural life. The course explores in depth the linguistic means of different discourses (media discourse, journalistic discourse, political discourse, advertising discourse, etc.). The objectives of the course. 1. to acquire basic knowledge about the role of language and discourse in constructing the reality of society; 2. to acquire basic knowledge of discourse and discourse analysis, as well as discourse analysis methodology; 3. to broaden the knowledge of Italian society, its political and cultural life, and the role of media in Italian society. The course is delivered in Italian.

Course objectives: 1. to provide an analytical approach to theoretical explanations of lifestyle; 2. to analyze the formation and functions of different lifestyles in Europe; 3. to explain the main topics of current debate concerning the way of life in Europe; 4. to explore various aspects of lifestyle, including social inequality, family and marriage, gender, health, recreation, media and modern technology, accessories, eating habits and religion. 5. to address recent trends in lifestyle changes and focus on sustainable living and the impact of European lifestyles on global climate change. Languages of instruction are English and Latvian.

Course goal: To develop interdisciplinary understanding of the importance of literature and culture in societal, historical and political processes and changes and to develop students' knowledge of how the main themes of contemporary literature and cultural discussions can be understood and studied on the relationship between literature and society. Course objectives: 1. To develop an understanding of literature as part of broader historical, socio-political and cultural contexts; 2. To focus on ways in which different types of texts and images reflect and produce discourses; 3. To develop skills to use theory and interdisciplinary methods of analysis of literary texts; 4. To develop competences to study and discuss texts from different cultural and historical circumstances and contexts, as well as from different disciplinary aspects. The aim of the course is to ensure the acquisition of the concepts, research methodology, concepts and artifacts of the historical development of culture, which are essential for the development of understanding of the cultural and environmental heritage and the study of humanities. The tasks are to introduce the students with: 1. specific methods and forms of knowledge specific to the sub-sectors of cultural philosophy and cultural history; 2. an analysis of the historical periods of culture and their characteristic patterns of world perception; 3. essential aspects of the formation and development of culture and civilization; 4. the major commonalities and differences between Eastern and Western cultures and worldviews. In the acquisition of the course, emphasis is placed on the critical analysis of cultural-philosophical, cultural-historical texts and argumentation, as well as on the location of cultural historical and contemporary artifacts in the cultural context.
