- special attention is paid to the study of historical and current links important to the Baltics. Within the programme, students will study common study courses and specialization courses of the chosen sub-programme such as Regional and transnational aspects of the German cultural environment, Paradigms of cultural science in Germanic studies, Media, communication and cultural media processes in German studies, Development trends of modern literary theory, Word in diachronic and history of lexicography, Language and regionality, Contacts and contrasts of Nordic languages and cultures, Intercultural communication in economics and translational aspects of applied texts, Translation of literary texts, etc. Study period and classes time The full – time degree programme covers two academic years. Classes are in the evenings of working days from 6.15pm till 9.30pm. Career opportunities Graduates of the study program can work in various state, non-governmental and private institutions

Introduction to History of the Baltic Languages: Theory and School Practice
Course
The aim of the course is to develop the professional competence of a Latvian philologist and of a Latvian language teacher by developing the awareness of Baltic ethnic history, the languages of Baltic tribes, their origin, the evolution of the Latvian and Lithuanian languages, as well as the research on the Baltic languages. Tasks of the study course: 1. To acquire the knowledge about the evolution of the Baltic languages; 2. To provide knowledge on the research of the Baltic language; 3. To be able to compare and distinguish the peculiarities of the Old Prussian, Latvian, Lithuanian languages; 4. To understand the extralinguistic factors of the formation of standard languages and to acquire the technique of reading and understanding ancient texts; 5. To connect the content of the study course with the study content of the Latvian language teaching at school. The language of instruction is Latvian.
