Workshops "On the Bridge: Germany, Baltic and Jews in Modern times"

In 2014, with the financial support of Baltic-German University Liaison Office* andThe Dutch Jewish Humanitarian Fundtwo workshops "On the Bridge: Germany, Baltic and Jews in Modern times" were held. Among the project partners there were Museum "Jews in Latvia", Tuebingen University (Germany),Vilnius University (Lithuania), University of Potsdam (Germany), Tallinn University (Estonia) and Moscow State University (Russia). The overall aim of the workshops wasto expand the view and understanding of Latvian students and researchers in the field of Jewish studies and specifically on the Baltic region’s mutual relations between different ethnic groups during the modern times, as well as to give an insight in the contemporary concept of Jewish history and culture in context of Europe’s history. First workshopwas dedicated to religious aspects of Jewish and other nations relations,whereas thesecond workshopwas dedicated to Yiddish and linguistic aspect of Jewish and other Baltic nations

The objective of the course is to introduce different aspects of Latvian musical culture, to reveal its universal and specific features and to show its place and meaning in the life of the Latvian people, thus providing students with the necessary background knowledge to discuss and to evaluate this music. Different kinds of music and its contexts are presented: from traditional to modern and postmodern. Archaic vocal forms, main genres and contexts of traditional vocal music are discussed, including music of historical minorities. The main functional groups of musical instruments – shepherd, ritual, ceremonial, signalization, magic and dance music instruments, and psaltery kokles – are characterized. The main religions and their musical practices are briefly touched. Academic (classical) music is presented from national romanticism and choral singing to minimalism and other modern developments. Different forms of musical folklorism – from staged folklorism to folklore movement

This course is designed for beginners who do not have any previous knowledge of the Turkish language. At the end of the course the students are expected to reach elementary A1 level of competency in the four macro skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) according to Common European Framework of References for Languages and develop the basic knowledge of grammar, vocabulary and the sounds system of the Turkish language.
