The aim of the study course is to develop the knowledge and abilities to prescribe an appropriate contact lens correction based on the results of examination and diagnosis of visual and functional anomalies and taking into account the individual needs and goals of the client.
The objectives of the study course are the following:
  • to provide knowledge about contact lens correction strategies and patients aftercare in optometric practice;
  • to provide skills and abilities in the handling, insertion, removal and evaluation of various materials, types and designs of contact lenses;
  • make correction of refraction in contact lenses and provide aftercare;
  • to provide knowledge about contact lens correction in complicated cases: refractive surgery, keratoconus, aphakia, and other specialized solutions such as therapeutic and colour contact lenses.

Refraction and contact lenses I
Course
The course is developed for the first study year of ophthalmology and for to ophthalmology related specialties residents to acquire theoretical and practical skills on examination and treatment patients with refractive errors. Refraction and contact lenses is acquired in parts during the 1st and 2nd study year. Tasks of the course: -to acquire the examination of a patient in the case of refractive errors, assessment of patient general condition, and the collection of anamnesis; -to acquire the evaluation of refractive condition, their types, methods for the determination of its strength; -to acquire the main parameters of lenses, peculiarities of refraction; -to acquire the types of contact lens, the indications and contraindications for their application; -to acquire indications for application of therapeutic contact lenses, duration of use, possible complications, the diagnostics of complications, treatment options. The course is taught in Latvian.
