Cooperation with HEI and research institutions

The Faculty of Humanities cooperates with the Latvian Academy of Culture, Ventspils University of Applied Sciences, Liepāja University, Daugavpils University, Rīga Stradiņš University and with other HEI (the cooperation in the field of science, implementation of several programmes, organization of seminars for PhD students, exchange with guest lecturers, etc). The Faculty of Humanities cooperates with the research institutions of the same field, e.g. Institute of the Latvian Language of the UL, Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art, Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the UL (cooperation in research, conference organization, regular visits of students to institutes, contacts with consultants and reviewers, etc).

1932 : to promote the development of the Garden, Professor N. Malta established the Association of the Friends of the Botanical Garden. 1933 : order, biological and cultivated plant beds were set up, as well as the Arboretum and Test fields. More than 3,100 different plants were collected in the Greenhouses, and around 4,400 various plants in – open air collections. 1936 : for international seed exchange, contacts with already 245 botanical gardens were maintained. 1937 : about 7,500 plants from 225 plant families were presented to visitors of the Garden.

Course
The course is developed for the first study year of ophthalmology and for to ophthalmology related specialties residents to acquire theoretical and practical skills on examination and treatment patients with refractive errors. Refraction and contact lenses is acquired in parts during the 1st and 2nd study year. Tasks of the course: -to acquire intraocular lenses, their classification, formulas for calculating lens strength, application of spherical lenses, cylindrical and prismatic lenses, their correction possibilities; -to acquire the refractive surgery, preoperative evaluation of a patient; -to acquire the methods of refractive surgery, it indications, contraindications, side effects. The course is taught in Latvian.

Sociology is a social science that studies the lives of people, social groups and societies, as well as gathers and generalizes all the knowledge about human development – including history, psychology and economics. This science examines our behaviour as social beings, from the temporary contacts of anonymous individuals in the crowd on the street to global social processes. The bachelor's study programme “Sociology” enables the students to acquire knowledge, skills and competences required in the research of social processes, collection and analysis of social information. The programme offers to become proficient in theories of sociology and the methods of sociological research. The students gain the ability to identify social problems, and, moreover, to suggest possible solutions.

The Faculty cooperates with Daugavpils University (the cooperation in the field of science, implementation of study programmes, including Doctoral study programme of History, organization of seminars, exchange with guest lecturers, etc.), Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences (guest lectures). The staff of the Faculty regularly teaches history and philosophy courses at pther faculties of the University of Latvia and universities. In cooperation with other faculties of the University of Latvia the implementation of Doctoral schools also takes place. The Faculty cooperates with other research centres and institutes of history and philosophy – Institute of Latvian History at the University of Latvia , Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the University of Latvia , etc. (cooperation in research, conference organization, regular visits of students to institutes, contacts with consultants and reviewers, students participate in archaeological research work and preparation

Language policy in the Baltic Sea Region states
Course
The aim of this course is to promote students’ knowledge and awareness on sociolinguistic situation and language policy in the Baltic Sea Region States (Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Russia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Germany as well as in Norway and Iceland). The course provides basic genealogical and comparative insight into languages spoken in the Baltic Sea Region States and presents sociolinguistic evaluation of the language and linguistic community situation of the languages and their users throughout several centuries. Territorial and functional language contacts as well as linguistic interferences of contact languages will be examined. The course explores language situations and general theoretical frameworks for the developments of language policies and various aspects of interaction of language and society. The course investigates the ethnodemographic composition, issues of legal aspects of language and minority protection as well as the international standards

The aim of the study course is to enhance the research competence of the doctoral students; to build the scientific competences necessary for the Baltic language researcher by engaging them in analysing and focusing on the topical research in Baltic linguistics.
