The course of Ancient history and Middle Ages consists of two parts: the first will look at the main themes of the history of the Ancient East and the history of Ancient Greece and Rome, while the second is the major phenomena of medieval history. The aim of the course is to raise awareness among students about the origin, development and historical nature of ancient civilizations, while, in the context of medieval history, political and cultural processes, the formation of a hierarchy of power and society in Christian Europe from the 5th and Livonia from the 13th to the 15th centuries. Chemistry for Environmental and Earth Sciences
Course
The aim of the course to provide students with an opportunity to obtain basic knowledge of chemical structure of substances, as well as key concepts of general chemistry, and illustrate the role of chemistry in the living environment, industry and the protection of the environment. Using lectures, laboratory work and seminar classes, the course provides an overview of the basic concepts of chemistry, starting with the structure of atoms and the properties of atoms, continuing with the chemical bond in compounds. The topics of physical chemistry on reaction rate, chemical equilibrium and thermodynamics, electrochemical processes are discussed below. More insight is given into acid-base equilibria in aqueous solutions. The second part of the course focuses on chemistry related to the geosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere, also looking at the chemical aspects of soil, water and air pollution. An overview of the chemistry of elements and their distribution in nature is also provided

The course provides theoretical framework for the characterization of cultural processes and phenomena which, being in interaction with literature and other forms of elite culture, are not in the research focus of the specialized branches of art. This field has been conceptualized in different periods as folklore, traditional and popular culture or intangible cultural heritage with the respective research paradigm and situation in the sociocultural system. The course examines the various aspects of the interpretation of cultural heritage and its significance for the formation of identities, reviewing critically the newest tendencies in the understanding of culture and identity. Students are encouraged to explore in their specialization fields the dominant characteristics and specifics of cultural heritage, its effect on the processes of identity formation and how identities affect the meanings attributed to cultural heritage. Course
The aim of the course is to provide students with an opportunity to learn to speak literary Arabic (Modern Standard Arabic) fluently about a variety of topics, to continue learning Arabic grammar, as well as to develop listening, reading and writing skills up to the level B2-1, taking into account the essential features of verbal and non-verbal communication adopted in Arabic culture and major taboos, and by examining the peculiarities of the Arabic language linguistics in comparison with Indo-European languages. Tasks of the course: 1. to acquire in-depth knowledge of research methods and their application possibilities, 2. develop understanding about the use of databases of academic publications, as well as the latest methods of data collection, data processing and analysis and provision of computer programs (including NViro), 3. to promote knowledge about the latest academic literature, the latest methods, data to be used, to exchange information on the possibilities of finding research funding.
